    The State I am In

Allow me to show you my desk:

    Lest you think I'm neat...

The state of my desk is much like the state of my mind… overworked and cluttered. Brandon and I are leaving tomorrow to go up to the family cabin in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. We’ll be there with the rest of his family, so it won’t exactly be a quiet, restful vacation (6 other adults, 4 children, 3 dogs)! Plus I have a million things to do before we leave, but it will still be nice to be away for a few days.

    Have a nice week, everybody!

  • No More Fluffs.

Wind + rain = no more fluffs.

    Stormy weather

The rod that I was using to hang them fell apart, and then the fluffs got wet. Dang.

  • Now We’re Cookin’

Our countertops have arrived and we now have a usable kitchen! Yippee! Remember what it looked like?

    Here it is now:

And remember my little white birds? They ended up over here:

There’s still some work to be done, but the kitchen looks (and functions) SO much better!

  • Tag, I’m It.

I’ve been tagged by Lynne from LKS Design, which makes this my… (drumroll) first tag ever! Whoo.

Rules of the game: Each player starts with 7 random facts/habits about themselves. People who are tagged need to then report this on their own blog with their 7 things as well as these rules. They then need to tag 7 others and list their names on their blog. They are also asked to leave a comment for each of the tagged, letting them know they have been tagged and to read the blog.

Well, I’m going to break the rules a little by not doing a follow-up tag to seven other people (sorry). If you’re interested though, here are seven random tidbits about me:

    img_2381a.jpg

    1. I read books about math – for fun. I love calculus. I worry that my knowledge of math will slip away because I never get to use it.

    2. I wear a dress or skirt almost every day. Yes, even in the cold, snowy, Chicagoland winter.

    3. I’m pretty handy – I used to be a handman (handywoman?). It drives me crazy when I go to the home improvement stores (in my dress/skirt, of course) and they say things like “make sure your husband helps you with that”.

    4. My favorite movies are somewhat embarassing: Grease, Dirty Dancing, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Breakfast Club… I could go on (but I won’t)!

    5. I can’t swim. Naturally, this means I’m afraid of large bodies of water and I hate being on boats.

    6. I like watching The Cosby Show reruns late at night on cable.

    7. I’m my own worst critic, and I’m a perfectionist.

    Informative, no?

  • Library!

    Library!

Our library is done! Well, it’s as “done” as anything around here ever is (curtains, I’m looking at you)…

    library

I must point out that the whole library idea was Brandon’s.

Brandon and I had both worked for Barbara’s Bookstore in Oak Park (that’s where we met and fell in love!). I was there for six years and he was there for five. Well, as you may imagine, we both have a lot of books.

See, the landing at the top of the stairs is huge (perhaps you remember that we had our bed out there when we were laying floors in the bedroom), so we knew we should take advantage of the space. It was Brandon’s idea to line the walls with bookshelves, and I must say – it was a fantastic idea. We had always talked about having a home library someday, and this way we were able to create one.

    library: before, during, after

The rug that was already there was staying since it wasn’t terrible. The paint though? Even I had second thoughts about going that dark. I love it now though, especially with the soft green ceiling color. Plus the white everywhere keeps it from feeling too overwhelmingly dark. And yes, I did paint the wood trim white. It wasn’t nice wood (it was about as cheap and generic as you can get with trim), so I don’t feel bad about painting it at all.

We bought the bookshelves and glass doors from IKEA. I don’t want to fill the home with IKEA everywhere, but we didn’t exactly have scads of money to do built-ins. I think we were able to get all of the bookshelves, doors, and lighting for about $700. Not bad!

We both love our “library”. It feels so luxurious to even be able to say that!

  • "They’re foxy to me…"

I decided to cut my bangs this morning (myself), and now I’m listening to Pavement (hence the quote). I suddenly feel fifteen again.
