A Daybed for the Guest Room

I just ordered the Lubi Daybed from CB2 for our little guest room.

I think the Pier 1 lamp that I bought for the office might find a home in the guest room too.

    New Lamp?

Do you know why? Because we have a guest coming! Lili will be staying here for a few days next week! We’ll be going to the Design*Sponge Biz Ladies Meet Up, the DIY Trunk Show, and maybe a couple of other events too.

I haven’t even started on the guest room yet though! Here’s what it looks like when it’s empty:

It’s an awkward little room (7′ x 14′, with a sloping ceiling). Any ideas? I haven’t devoted much thought to it yet, but maybe we can whip it into shape quickly! You know, in all of my spare time. ;)

    Office Lamp Mock-ups

I tried out a few lamps with Photoshop to see which one I liked best, but I’m still not sure.

Here’s the office with the new lamp:

Here’s the same lamp, but with a white shade:

  • "Chili" Lamp?

    "Chili" Lamp?

I bought a new lamp from Pier 1 yesterday. I’m not sure if it’s actually called “Chili” (I think that’s just the color), but it wasn’t on the website and I don’t remember what the name was on the tag.

I’m not 100% sure about it yet. Keep it? Return it?

    New Lamp

It would be for my office. I love the lamp that I have in there now, but the power switch is somewhat broken and now it hurts my wrist to turn it off.

I’ve been thinking about getting the Lights Up! Nikki Table Lamp:

That one is $185 though, and the lamp that I bought was only $75. Still, I’d rather spend the extra money and get the lamp I really want instead of skimping and getting one that’s only so-so. The problem is that I’m not sure which one I want…

  • A Change of Plans

    A Change of Plans

The bathroom is further along, but I’m afraid I’ve deviated a bit from the original plan!

I hated the lights above the medicine cabinet, so I bought a new fixture for $30 from Lowes. We had to take the cabinet down to install the new light, and then realized that we couldn’t put it back up. The lights wouldn’t clear the top, and there were going to be some harsh shadows.

The new plan: hang a mirror instead and add a small medicine cabinet to the right, over the toilet. I bought a mirror ($30) and a cabinet ($40) from IKEA. Oh, and I repainted.

    Bathroom Redo

It looks pretty good so far! The trim still needs to be primed and painted, and I haven’t done anything to the vanity yet.

    So far, so good

  • Kitchen Light

    Kitchen Light

I finally found a kitchen light. Huzzah!

I went to Hortons in La Grange. I told the person that helped me (Michael) that I was looking for a flush mount or semi-flush mount light that could take three light bulbs and wouldn’t look out of place in our 1920 home. He showed me several choices in the store and pointed out more options in a catalog that could be ordered. The one that I chose was in stock (yay!), so I bought it and took it home.

And it looks a little something like this:

It’s nothing amazing, but that’s OK. It’s a simple, good-looking light that isn’t a period piece, but it isn’t ultra mod either. And it can take three 100 watt bulbs, which is great (since it will be the only ceiling light).

Now I just need to make a decision about the under-cabinet lighting… fluorescent, halogen, or xenon? I’m leaning toward the xenon fixtures. The light is adjustable (high/low), and not as hot as halogen. Plus it’s easier to wire (no need for a tranformer box). The downside is the cost ($300 for xenon vs. $100 for halogen). Eh, I’ll figure it out.

  • Quick Fix for the Pendant

    Quick Fix for the Pendant

When I’m sitting on the couch in the living room, I have a clear view into Brandon’s office. There was a sad little light that hung down in the center of the room, and I hated it. It was ugly, and the bulb stuck out from the bottom. We bought a new light from IKEA ($15), and just switched it out the glass part.

    Much better.
