    Update: Modular Home Office Furniture

I figured out my office storage situation, and it’s going to look fantastic!

    Modular Office Storage

And I say “going to” because the file cabinet for the center isn’t expected to ship until June. So this will be the setup for a while.

    Setting up the office storage

I mean, the furniture at least. I will clean up the wallpaper samples at some point in the next three months.

I came in nicely under budget though! I had set aside $2000 for the wall of storage, and came in at less than half of that. I bought the floor model Benchwright Desk Hutch for $299 instead of $499 at full price, and I ordered the modular Martha Stewart Living Craft Studio pieces during their St. Patrick’s Day sale (17% off), making them $562 instead of $677. I could have gone with a different configuration and saved a little more, but I felt like the extra $100 or so was worth it for more drawers, rather than open shelves.

The lights I have there now were grabbed from another room, and the sconces in the mockup aren’t final, but this is the general idea. The backordered filing cabinet is going to slow things down a bit, but at least the decision has been made and the order placed. Progress! Slow, slow progress.

I want to line an 8′ long wall with office storage, but there are a few limitations. Our third floor has a ceiling height of 8′ in the center of rooms, but there are lot of funny angles because of the roof line and I’ll only have 54″ of clearance. There is already a desk and a table in the room, so I’m looking for something higher than 30″ to break up that horizontal plane. I also can’t bring anything up in one piece that’s too long, because it won’t fit up the stairs! So here’s what I’m looking for.

    • 36-54″ tall, and up to 86″ long.
    • Modular, or something that can be assembled in the room.
    • A mix of drawers, filing cabinets, and open storage.
    • $2000 budget (of course less would be nice)

Modular home office furniture can check all those boxes. I’ve looked at options from IKEA, Crate & Barrel, Restoration Hardware, Arhaus, Pottery Barn, Wayfair, Ballard Designs, Home Decorator’s Collection, and probably a few more that I’m forgetting right now.

I’m going to choose something with a base height of 30-36″ and then add more storage on top with a hutch. The extra storage on top doesn’t necessarily have to be from the same collection, though a lot of them do have options that all work together (a bonus so that the finishes match exactly). I’ve narrowed down my options to Pottery Barn’s Printer’s Office, the Original Home Office line from Ballard Designs, and the Martha Stewart Living Craft Space collection.

These are in scale with one another, and those sconces are placed at 46″ high. The full retail price is listed above, but all three are currently on sale (and go on sale pretty regularly). But wait, there’s more! Here are a couple of mix and match possibilities.

The base from Ballard Designs in their Tuscan Brown finish can be paired up with the Benchwright Desk Hutch from Pottery Barn. The finishes are a bit different, but I’m liking it. Or the Ballard base in white with a Martha Stewart Hutch?

    Which would you choose?

  • Meeting Martha

    Meeting Martha

I met Martha Stewart last week.

Let’s back up for a minute, because that is something I’ve been wanting to say for a long time. Meeting Martha was on my Lovely Life List. I admire her business acumen, her signature look and brand, and I’m grateful to her for being a pioneer and paving the way for what I and many of my blogging peers are able to do today.

Martha was in Chicago to appear at a Home Depot event. I received a casual email from her PR team, asking if I was interested in meeting with Martha and doing a quick interview. I resisted the urge to pepper my reply with OMGs and excessive exclamation marks (!!!), and instead said “yes, thank you.”

    Nicole Balch and Martha Stewart

There were five of us there to interview Martha, but her plane was delayed and that threw her schedule off. Instead of one-on-one time, we went in as a group for twenty minutes. She greeted us with a smile and a grand sweep of her arms as she surveyed the surroundings. “Welcome… to the Home Depot break room.” Martha answered questions about her favorite designers (Kevin Sharkey for home, Vince for fashion) and recounted her biggest entertaining emergency (“It’s hard to have a true emergency when you’re prepared”), and then I was able to ask my question.

I was already familiar with the upcoming American Made Awards honoring creative entrepreneurs, and I wanted to know if Martha ever imagined having a brand with such reach and scope that she could do something like this. Here’s our very brief interview.

Nicole: I have this funny job of being a professional blogger, and I feel like a lot of the opportunities that exist for me today are the result of what people like you have done in leading the way. I loved this quote from Pilar [Guzmán] in her editor’s letter this month.

“We believe we are at a defining cultural moment, when so many people are making a go of their creative passions and, in doing so, fueling a new American economy.”

I know you have the American Made event coming up in New York, but looking back, way back to when you were catering, did you ever imagine that you would have a brand that would touch on so many of these things?”

Martha: I don’t know if I imagined it, but I certainly hoped it. Because I really feel very strongly that there are so many talented people in this country, and we’ve always made a point of introducing them to our audience. Our magazines have always been filled with people who were great growers, great artisans, great party-givers – whatever they do, we like to tell people about them. And this event is really bringing to the fore the importance and the need for Americans to start promoting “American made” again. It makes me very sad to go to North Carolina and not see a cotton mill anywhere. A weaving mill, a sheet factory — they’re all gone. And they shouldn’t be gone. We should still be making sheets and bedding in America. We grew all the cotton, and now we’re outsourcing it.

I just did a big piece on Toyota for American Made. Now Toyota, you think “oh, it’s a Japanese car,” but they have one of the largest car factories in America making half a million cars a year in Kentucky. I went and visited the factory, and we made a whole car. They make thousands of cars every single day, and it’s start to finish. So we showed the whole process and these are going to be a series of short videos that will be on their website and our website. We have the ability to do that. To show people a lot of the processes that go into various products, and it changes their business. It changes a lot of people’s businesses when you really show them to your big audience. And we’ve had a very big audience for a long time.

Thank you, Martha (and team) for taking time out of your schedule to meet with an admiring blogger.

Ooooh. This all comes at a very dangerous time for me, as I’m about to start working on my new studio space in the basement. Let the planning commence!

  • Martha Stewart Paint Review

    Martha Stewart Paint Review

I used Martha Stewart’s new line of paint for The Home Depot this weekend to paint the bedroom. Since I shared a preview of the colors with you a while back, I thought I should now share my experience with the paint. I used flat/matte interior paint in ‘Zinc’. And before you start your next painting project, take a look at the guide I wrote recently: DIY Painting Tips, Tricks, and a Step-By-Step Guide.

    Martha Stewart 'Zinc' Paint

Martha Stewart’s paint is Low VOC. I actually like the smell of paint (I know it’s bad for you), but this had hardly any odor. I did notice a slight (not unpleasant) scent when I first opened the paint can, but that was it. What I did notice right away though is that the paint is very thin. Behr is the thickest I’ve used, and I still prefer Benjamin Moore, but the Martha Stewart paint was by far the thinnest. I was a bit concerned but apart from being messy to pour, it wasn’t a problem.

The first coat of paint gave me beautiful coverage and I adore the color. I’m a perfectionist and I always put a second coat on, but I think many people would have been happy with just the first. I painted the ceiling as well as the walls, and I experienced absolutely no splattering (which is often a problem when painting celings). Maybe it’s because of the thin consistency? The only problems I had while painting were the occasional drips from loading too much paint on my brush or roller. I just had to adjust my technique and wipe off more paint before applying to the wall. One gallon was enough to paint my 12’x12′ room.

At first I thought that the paint was fine and that I would use it again without hesitation, but now here’s where the hesitation comes in. We leaned our mattress against the wall while we were bringing furniture back into the room, and when we grabbed the mattress to put it in the bed frame, it slid against the wall a bit. The paint was fully dry, having been finished 36 hours earlier, but the mattress left a few scuff marks. They’re only visible if the light hits the wall in just the right way (I didn’t even notice them until the next morning), but they are there.

I should also note that I have received very mixed reviews from readers. A few people have mentioned using Martha Stewart’s new line of paint and loving it, but a few have absolutely hated it. My final thoughts? There are some beautiful colors to choose from, and I liked the paint a lot, but I didn’t completely love it. Honestly? I would consider using it again, but I’d be just as likely to have it color-matched.

Possible Paint Colors for the Bedroom

I am working with American Express to redo my bedroom. This week they have provided me with 100,000 Membership Rewards points.

As I mentioned last week, I haven’t decided if I’m going to paint the bedroom or not. I could redeem some of my points for a Home Depot gift card, so I’m considering a few colors from Martha Stewart’s new line of paint.

    Bedroom Paint Swatches

Brandon and I are both partial to ‘Zinc’, but I also like ‘Gray Squirrel’, ‘Brook Trout’, and ‘Seal’.

p.s. I got the striped sheets. I had them shipped to me from a west elm in Florida, and they are awesome.
