Earrings — You Know What to Do With Them

I have seven holes total in my ears. Three in each lobe, and a helix piercing in the cartilage of my left ear. (What? It was the 90s.) I did that last one myself, in high school, with an ice cube and an earring post. Not recommended! I told my mom “I did something. If you don’t like it, I can take it out…”

Yeah, I don’t use all of those piercings anymore, but I do like one good pair of earrings. Pixie cuts and earrings are BFFs.

Cute Earrings

  1. Tela Earrings, Tiro Tiro
I showed these in September, but I’m still thinking about ’em.

  2. Rose Gold Flathead Studs, Bauble Bar
The handywoman in me wants these.

  3. Mountain Hoop Earrings, Lila Rice
    Big and angular, FTW.

  4. Small Square Studs, Kate Spade
Despite the name, these are not small. They’re of a lovely scale with a nice clear color.

  5. 1909 by Erica Weiner, Catbird
    For channeling William Tell.

  6. Torchlit Brass Drops, Anthropologie
I’ve shown these before too, back in June. I keep hoping they’ll go on sale, but it’s not looking likely. So huge! So awesome!

  7. Staccato Earrings, Madewell
These are teeny tiny, and I have worn these in my second ear piercings a few times lately. Rebel rebel.

  8. Stacked Jewel Earrings, J. Crew
I’m not in love with the way they look on screen, but in person they’re fantastic.

  9. Lady Marmalade Studs, Kate Spade
A pretty option for when you need a something sparkly but not TOO sparkly.

  10. Clara Earrings, Loren Hope
These are larger than you might think, but I like that in earrings.

And I tweeted this when Eleanor initially said it, but it’s too good not to share here. Genius copywriting, by a four-year-old:

“Earrings. They can go in your ears, and STAY in your ears. Earrings. Put them in your holes.”

I have a pixie cut too, but I’m a bit lazy about finding interesting earrings. I usually keep it simple so that I can leave a pair in indefinitely and not have to think about coordinating them with any particular outfit. In that vein, I like #4 and #7. (I’ve had as many as 10 holes in my ears over the decades! Right now I’m just using one on each side, but one day I may have to start using the others again to prove to my kid just how cool I used to be once…)

Beautiful curation, Nicole! I love how great earrings can turn a simple outfit into something fantastic! My secret source for great earrings (shh!) are estate sales. I like to imagine that the sweet and elegant woman who owned them previously would be happy they went to someone who appreciates them.

Loving this but my problem is this. I feel like with glasses and short hair that earrings can sometimes be too much? I feel too ‘decorated’, you’ve inspired me to have another go though and try something apart from the diamond studs I’ve worn every day for 5 years!

I’ve heard other people say the same thing. I guess I’m so used to my glasses that I just see them as part of my face, ha! ;)

I wouldn’t do glasses AND red lipstick AND earrings AND a necklace, etc. etc. Glasses and one of those things seem to be my formula.

I’m like Jenn below that I’m never without earrings because I just don’t like the way I look without them. However, when I first cut my hair super short, I immediately tucked all of my big chandelier dangly earrings away like Caroline. I still loved them, but I felt like they were too in your face… not for me, but for other people. I usually dress for myself, so I’m not sure where this philosophy came from. Happily, I’m now working the big earrings back into my rotation.

My boyfriend seems really surprised by the fact that I am rarely without earrings in my ears, but I feel so naked without them! Well, not naked but certainly not very pretty.

And I want all the Kate Spade earrings. ALL. (But especially the tortoise ones. I’m hoping for those for Christmas.)

Ha! I pierced my nose with the ice cube and stud combo. Funny thing is, my husband has more piercings than I do. I have one half-closed hole in each ear. I think I need more cute earrings in my life. Maybe the #7’s.

Love the piercing story :) I pierced my nose myself in high school (also, not recommended!). Do you know the store Catbird? (catbirdnyc.com) They have the best jewelry – just wish my wallet could afford it!

I pierced my own with my girlfriend while our husbands were in Viet Nam (1968) fighting the war that was so unpopular (in hindsight). We froze them with ice, burned a fat needle ‘sterile’ and held a raw potato behind our earlobe! Then wore gold ear-posts for 6 weeks with frequent alcohol dabs. Healed wonderfully. Very little pain.

Love my moderate sized collection but my tastes have changed over the years! No more gold studs for sure.

PS: I have a good friend who grew up in your neighborhood. I adore your house!

An ice cube and an earring post?! Girl. You are hard core. Also, I didn’t see that tweet earlier but I am dying with laughter over here! It’s like a really serious public service announcement for getting your ears pierced.

Oh my god, it was the worst idea. It took some serious commitment because it didn’t just go right through, and you could *hear* your progress.

I have the same number of piercings as you do (did?) except I did my 2nd hole on each ear myself with the ice cube and earring post one night at a sleep over with friends. Seems the thing to do in the 90’s aye. Love all the earrings! I have a serious problem with wanting any and all pretty earrings.

I love earrings of all sorts but am not good at pairing them with a necklace. I don’t like the matching look. I wear earrings & bracelets to solve that problem. But I sure would like to wear all those necklaces I own, Any tips?
