  • Number 1 in the Venus Zine Hottt List!

I was surprised when I was nominated, thrilled when I was interviewed, and then shocked when I saw my face staring back at me in the Winter 2008 issue of Venus Zine! The magazine won’t be on newsstands until December 1, but I subscribe and my copy arrived today.

Without even looking through the table of contents, I started flipping through to see if I could find the little blurb I was expecting about Pink Loves Brown. Um, SURPRISE. I found it right away, since there’s a photo of me that takes up a quarter of a page! Yowza.

A two page feature! And I won the top spot in the Hottt List! Amazing. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU to everyone that voted for me!

  • Pregnant!

    Pregnant!

Brandon and I are going to have a baby!

I’m 13 weeks along and the due date is April 14. I had a pretty rocky first trimester, which is why I didn’t want to say anything right away. I was on bed rest for a while and there was a lot of bleeding and cramping and worrying, but I’m (we’re!) doing much better now.

The upside of having to go in several times for emergency doctor visits and ultrasounds is that we got some very early pictures of our little blob – I mean baby!

    Baby!
It really does just look like a little blob at 6 and 8 weeks.

And of course, Brandon tricked me a few weeks ago into taking a barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen photo. Oh, you should have seen his face as I figured out what he was doing! Too proud of himself on that one. ;)

Anyway, we’re thrilled to finally announce the news. We’re having a baby!

  • Remote Control

I bought a remote controlfor my camera so that I could take self-portraits. Or as Brandon put it, I’ve invested $30 in the ongoing self-absorption project that is my narcissism.

    Fascinating

This is the other fascinator I bought from Love, Lulu Mae at the Renegade Craft Fair. Brandon’s sisters came over for my birthday and I thought that was a perfect excuse to wear it.

  • It’s All About Meme.

I’ve been tagged, twice (by This Young House and midwestmoderngirl). I suppose I’d better get around to it, eh?

    1. What did you do 10 years ago?
I had just graduated high school, and I was getting a head start on college with a philosophy 101 course that crammed an entire semester into an intensive two week course. I loved it, but I learned not to major in philosophy (which was my plan at the time). My teacher said that philosophy majors either become teachers or garbagemen. Yeah.

    2. Five items on your to-do list:
    – Finish coding two WordPress blogs for clients.
    – Plant the flowers I bought that are slowly dying in their containers.
    – Pull up the weeds that are EVERYWHERE.
    – Put a patio in the backyard (I am NOT looking forward to the digging we’ll be doing this weekend).
    – Take Murray to the vet for a check-up.

    3. Snacks I enjoy:
I LOVE chocolate and peanut butter, but I haven’t had much peanut butter since it made me sick a couple of months ago. I’ve been eating green seedless grapes and cheddar flavored rice cakes lately. Not at the same time though.

    4. What would you do if you were a billionaire?
We would of course help our family (pay off all debts/mortgages) and donate a lot, but for the fun stuff… I would love to have a house with an open, airy studio space (similar to Amy Butler’s). I like the whole fixing up process (as you may have noticed), so I’d love to have a new ‘project’ to work on!

    5. Places I would live:
    – Portland
    – New York
    – Paris

    6. Jobs I have had:
    – Amusement Park Ride Operator
    – Handy(wo)man
    – Telephone Survey Person (not telemarketing, but almost as annoying)
    – Bookseller
    Stationer / Shop Owner
    Web & Graphic Designer

    7. Bloggers I am tagging who you will enjoy getting to know better:
I will simply remind Jules that she was also tagged and that we are waiting

  • After The National Stationery Show

It took six hours to get our crate back. Frankly, we were thrilled that our crate came back to the booth in one piece. We saw a couple of crates that belonged to other companies (that were the same style), and they were smashed up pretty badly. I don’t recommend our crate, and we would NOT use the same one again.*

    Everything's in the Crate

*Side note: Does anyone know where to get a sturdy crate? You know, one that made from actual pieces of wood (not balsa)? I want a good one, and I want to paint it pink. One company had their crates painted pale blue, and I thought that was pretty smart – so easy to spot.

    Brandon

I was amazed at the amount of trash strewn about. There must be an enormous amount of waste from a trade show.

    Such a Mess

We could have gone back home the next day, but it was our anniversary so we planned to stay in New York for it. We walked to ABC Carpet and Home (where I bought our pink zigzag Madeline Weinrib rug).

    ABC Carpet and Home

On the way we saw the Flatiron building. It was beautiful!

    The Flatiron Building

We have a lot of Beaux-Arts buildings here in Chicago, and of course we have a lot of work by Burnham, but I’ve always wanted to see the Flatiron. I wanted to see the Chrysler building too, but that will have to wait for another trip.

We went to Rockefeller Center and ate lunch in the café area down by the fountain.

    The Fountain at Rockefeller Center

We walked back through Times Square (again), and also walked down Broadway. Along the way, we saw a shady Mickey Mouse with a tip bag, and also the most ridiculous window display ever.

Brandon and I made sure to visit the Museum of Modern Art, and I’m so glad we did. Along with architecture, I studied art history in school. So yeah… I LOVED it. I had seen some of the paintings before, and I’ve seen other works by most of the artists, but it was still wonderful. I especially loved the colored light room that was part of Olafur Eliasson’s Take Your Time.

It was so beautiful – photos don’t do it justice. I felt like crying, I was so moved.

We did a lot more walking, eventually exhausting ourselves.

Later in the hotel, it being our last night in New York, we took a couple of pictures of ourselves together in the bathroom mirror. They’re the only photos we have from the whole trip with both of us in them…

    On Our Anniversary

    Nice. :)
