    Eleanor’s Room (Sources)

Furnishings Partially Provided by The Land of Nod

I’ve made a page listing all of the sources for everything in Eleanor’s room. I think it’s a nice mix of vintage, reused, and new, and I can’t wait to show you the finished result!

Eleanor’s New Bedroom (It’s Almost Done!)

I have a few more little peeks into Eleanor’s new bedroom for you today. The vintage dresser from her nursery that we painted pink is there. It needs something above it, I think. Oh, and pay no attention to the holes in the wall next to the hooks! I may have repositioned that one on the left a few times.

Eleanor’s rocking chair is off to the side, between the dresser and the closet.

And here is Eleanor’s bedside table, sans any styling. It’s always filled with books. I’m considering painting it one day, but white is fine for now.

Tomorrow, I’ll share the sources for everything, and soon I can share the finished room!

  • Toy Storage in Eleanor’s New Room

Toy Storage in Eleanor’s New Room

Partially Furnished by The Land of Nod

Eleanor was happy to sleep in her big-girl bed, but bringing in her toys really sealed the deal on her new room.

There is a nook behind the door to her room that lends itself well to toy storage. It used to look like this when it was still my studio:

    Storage Behind the Door

Now that all of the studio furniture has made its way down to the basement, I put a couple of storage bins for toys along that wall. I was going to switch out those curtains that I made, but I decided that they were too cute to get rid of.

Larger toys go in the opposite corner under the eaves. It’s looking a little messy already, so I think I’ll add a big basket help contain things a bit.

We gave Eleanor a train set for her birthday, and she’s been having a lot of fun with it (“CHOO CHOO!!!”) on her play table. I like that there is a trundle underneath for storage too. That’s where her vintage colorforms blocks and a few other toys are.

The bookshelves in her room are gorgeous, but they could use a little bit of styling. Nothing too over the top (this is a toddler’s room), but a little prettying up wouldn’t hurt.

I need to figure out what to do above them for art. You can see the closet to the right there, with the recycled paper bunting that I made a while back, and that’s staying. The bunny clock was in Eleanor’s nursery and I like it in her new room, but it isn’t necessarily staying where it is. I think the fabric ‘e’ might get hung too, but I’m not sure what else to do. Maybe a big art grouping? Any ideas?

  • How Low Can You Go?

    How Low Can You Go?

With a bedside table, that is. I’ve been trying to find a cute round one for Eleanor’s new room. I thought the Martini Side Table would be perfect, but then I realized how short it is. Next to the bed, it would look something like this:

Too small, I think. The top of the mattress will be about two feet off the floor and the side table is only 16.5″ tall. Compare that with the 27.5″ tall Jenny Lind Nightstand that Land of Nod pairs with the bed, and it seems downright tiny.

    These are in the running:

Pop-Up Storage Bedside Table (27″ tall)
    Manchester Media Stand (25″ tall)

I like that I can store books on the shelves below, but I’m still pining for the cute Martini Table. I was also considering the Kartell Componibili (the tallest of which is 23″), but I’m not in love with the colors.

How high/low do you like your bedside table to be? Ours in the bedroom are about 6″ higher than the top of the mattress and that has always seemed like a good height, but I wouldn’t go any higher. The table should probably be at least even with the top of the mattress though, right?

    Edit

    12:45 p.m.
I did a little more Photoshop work. This is how the bed would look with the Pop-Up Table (painted green). Pretty cute.

  • Decision Made.

    Decision Made.

Eleanor will be sleeping in a Jenny Lind bed.

I know the peacock headboard is cool/unique/cute/awesome, but almost everyone that had one when growing up admitted to breaking off the circles. And the Minnen extendable bed is a great size (twin-sized width but adjustable in length), but the thin mattress and difficult bed-making would have bothered me. The only downside to the Jenny Lind bed was the higher price.

OK, I could have tried to be patient and waited for one (in good condition) to pop up on Craigslist or eBay. I could have even hoped that the poor review was wrong and went for the more affordable one at Sears/Kmart, but then I’d have to pay $90 for shipping. And either way I’d have to find bed rails and slats or a box spring. And prime and paint the frame. And really, with a basement renovation in progress (and plenty of work ahead there), and me being seven and a half months pregnant, the ready-to-go bed from Land of Nod was looking pretty good. And hello, it just happened to be on sale at a store that never puts their furniture on sale, for one day only on the very day I wrote about it? Yeah, I went ahead and took that as a sign. I ordered the bed that day, and Brandon picked it up at the Naperville warehouse Saturday morning.

Of course, we can’t set it up until we get the studio moved down to the basement. But soon. And by soon, I mean hopefully before the new baby arrives.

  • Which Bed for Eleanor?

    Which Bed for Eleanor?

    Which Bed for Eleanor?

I’m torn. I love the cool peacock headboard that we have from eBay (to be painted), but I’ve been thinking that the Minnen extendable bed may be a better fit for us right now.

    • If I use the peacock headboard, I’ll have to get a twin-sized bed for it. That’s going to limit my layout options in the room. What I love about the Minnen is that it’s as wide as a twin-size, but the length is adjustable.
    • The peacock headboard would attach to the wall and the bed would just bump up next to it. Maybe this is silly to think, but I feel like the bed will shift away and the pillows will always be falling down behind. No?
    • The Minnen is really cute here, and would look much better with wallpaper (if we in fact wallpaper).
    • I do worry about the slats of the Minnen shifting under jumping kiddos on the bed (since a few readers mentioned that as being a problem with IKEA beds).
    • If we have more kids and two need to share a room, I think two Minnen beds would work well. (But that’s a big hypothetical IF, and many years away.)
    • That peacock headboard is just plain awesome. Although Eleanor may well break off the cirlicues.
    • When we go to IKEA, Eleanor is drawn to the Minnen. But Brandon pointed out that she would probably be equally happy to have the peacock headboard too.

I don’t know. I can argue for or against each one. What do you think?
