Everyone is Enjoying the New Rug

Yes, the granny chic rug is in my office, and it’s pretty fantastic.

    Eleanor and Kili

Eleanor’s practicing for Stuff on my Cat with Kili. Kili is too lazy to move.

p.s. There are a dozen new photos of Eleanor up on my flickr page. I am sparing you the extra eleven, but feel free to click over if you’re so inclined.

I think the Freida lamp would look great with the steps wool hooked rug, don’t you?

    Granny Chic Lamp and Rug

When I first saw the rug, I couldn’t decide if I liked it or not. I mentioned it on twitter and facebook, and the responses were pretty divided (with references to both Missoni and the Golden Girls). After thinking about it for a bit though, I’ve decided that I quite like it! Finding the lamp to go with the rug really helps pull the two together with a little style, albeit it a granny chic style.

What do you think? Love it or hate it?

Feeling Slightly Blue in the Dining Room

    Feelin Groovy FLOR

Remember this? Our dining room FLOR is finally down (Feelin Groovy in Pewter).

    Dining Room

I think it looks a little too blue.

We’re keeping it because I haven’t found anything better*, it was cheap, and we need a rug in the space. I like the bare wood floor, but our dog Murray would disagree. He has no traction and has already suffered the consequences of slipping badly (he’s fully recovered now). Oh, and he likes to eat his treats while standing on a carpet (he’s odd). When we had the bare floors he would go from the kitchen through the dining room and end up in the living room on the zigzag rug. We can’t have that, now can we?

    * OK, there was one rug that I liked better: JORUN from IKEA. But it only comes in 5’x8′ and I don’t think two of them together would be as seamless as I’d like. Plus I don’t think it would be wise to add yet another pattern to the main area of our home… even though it would look excellent with the wallpaper.

  • It’s Like Living in Google Maps

It’s Like Living in Google Maps

We’ve put down the Be My Neighbor Rug that Brandon and I bought almost two months ago.

    Be My Neighbor Rug FLOR

It’s in his office, looking awesome.

    Brandon's Office

Bookshelves line one wall of the room, and as I showed you last week, that’s where all of our DVDs are currently stored.

    Billy Bookcases

Brandon displays a lot of his stuff on top, and also on the shelves above.

    Brandon's Office

The desk was left behind by our home’s previous owners, and the chair is from IKEA. Brandon doesn’t work from home like I do, so we figured that the chair would be fine for light, occasional use. It looks nice but unfortunately it has developed a loud creak that we can’t fix.

    Brandon's Office

What’s that on his desk in lieu of fresh flowers, you ask? Fire Flowers!

    Fire Flowers!

OK, so his office is more like a combination of Google Maps PLUS geeky pop culture references.

  • Time for a New FLOR

    Time for a New FLOR

The sisal rug in our dining room is about five years old, and it has a big threadbare spot on it that was just made much worse this weekend by vacuuming. Luckily, FLOR just opened a store in Chicago, so Brandon and I headed out to see what we could find.

We went through, grabbing a sample of each carpet style and color that interested us. Then we started narrowing down the choices (too dark, too light, can’t withstand heavy foot traffic, and so on), until we ended up with our final selection: Feelin Groovy in Pewter.

    Feelin Groovy FLOR

Brandon and I also really liked the Be My Neighbor Rug.

Where could we use something so awesome? In Brandon’s office, of course. He’s going to feel like a giant.

  • Painting the Porch Rug

    Here’s how I spent my Saturday afternoon…

    Painted Rug in Progress

There’s me, the round little roly-poly VERY pregnant lady, painting the porch. Aye, my back hurts! And please note that the Chicago weather is NOT cooperating with us. I’m wearing a shirt, a hoodie, and a big bulky sweater — it was only 45 degrees out.

To be fair, I must let you know that Brandon, his sister Jessica, and several other people have offered to help me paint. It had to be me though because I was painting the pattern freehand. I couldn’t just pick stripes or a checkerboard pattern that someone else could work on for me, now could I? No, that would have been too easy, and of course I’m all about making things difficult as can be. ;) The pattern was inspired by a rug from Urban Outfitters, and also the flower petal patterns my grandmother used to draw.

    Painted Rug in Progress

Brandon made some excellent progress today as well. Our table and chair set has been painted!

    Spray Painting Furniture

We still have a few things to do for the front porch, but they should go fairly quickly. And as I told my mom, we still have time because the baby isn’t due until Tuesday and I’ve instructed her to stay put until then. We have too much to do before she arrives, and our doctor will be out of town until Monday night. I’m sure the baby will listen, right?
