    Art to Stand On

The past few weeks with a newborn have been a bit of a snooze, sartorially speaking. Luckily I have a cute baby to distract from what I’m wearing, but I’ve been rotating through the same few pairs of pants (these were fantastic until near the end of my pregnancy, and now they’re great again post-baby) and mostly rocking the early nursing days standard of a tank and cardigan. It works, but it’s nice to have a fun new pair of shoes from BucketFeet to switch things up a bit!

The patterns on each of their shoes are designed by artists (painters, graffiti artists, writers, illustrators, tattoo artists, and so on) from all over the world, bringing a little wearable art to your wardrobe. Eleanor is learning how to tie her shoes, so we picked out a lace up pair for her, too.

    Cute Shoes from BucketFeet

BucketFeet was launched in 2011 by two strangers who met by chance in Argentina while backpacking. The artists that they collaborate with are based all over the world, but my shoes were designed by Erin Burke, a graphic designer based right here in Chicago! Such a cool connection. Now they have just launched dozens of new styles for the season including mid tops, and brand new holiday low top styles. You can see some of my favorites, below.

I nixed the teal idea for the entryway and went with a dusty blue/green/gray. Teal would have played beautifully with the wood, but I felt like it was going to be too much in the context of the rest of the house. Subtle is a bit better in this case.

Victorian Entryway and Staircase, Making it Lovely

The color is Sherwin-Williams’ Comfort Gray. It continues up the stairs and down the second floor hallway. It’s also in our bedroom, and when I chose the color, I wrote “before we moved into this house, I did tell Brandon to slap my hand away from the paint if I start trying to put gray on all the walls. But! This is more bluish!” I still stand by that because while gray is lovely, but I get tired of seeing it again and again. So then of course I used it, again. (Ha. But this is bluish!)

    Making it Lovely's Entryway

I’ve had that lamp for almost a decade (here it is in our old apartment, just before I started blogging), and I picked up the sideboard shortly after moving in to store our shoes. I’ve since added a boot tray below for wet shoes and boots that we can pull out as needed. The rug is vintage, as are the Thonet chairs, and the painting is by Jenny Vorwaller.

    Making it Lovely's Entryway

The lamp adds some much-needed light, and the bowl is a great drop spot for Brandon’s wallet and keys. We added a desk to the library, so our mail is being sorted there now instead of in the entryway, leaving most of the sideboard top to serve as a pretty display surface. So I prettied it up with a few new additions!

    Fall Flowers and Candles

I love that gold polka dot vase. The house’s architecture is formal, so it’s nice to inject a little levity here and there. And please do forgive the flowers for not looking their best. They were much prettier four days prior to being photographed, but then, you know… I went into labor! By the time I was out of the hospital and able to set my camera up, the pink dahlia had just about had it, and I had to pitch most of the dusty miller entirely. (Blame baby.)

    Making it Lovely's Entryway

The black vase is vintage, and the Charley Harper owl was a gift. I added a few art books and a few candle lanterns. Those are pretty now for fall, but they’ll be great for holiday decorating too.

Victorian Entryway and Staircase, Making it Lovely

This was super fun to play around with when I was going nuts with nesting energy. It’s also really nice to come home to.

  • New Lights, and New Favorites

    New Lights, and New Favorites

There are three existing lights in the hallway: the one that you can see below, hanging down (which is cute and has a round glass shade), and two others that don’t match. Now that the hall construction is complete and the walls have been painted, I want all three lights to be identical for continuity. I was looking for flush mount fixtures in brass to match the metal finishes throughout the Victorian, in a small scale, and in a classic style. I wanted something that looked good, but nothing that was too much of an in-your-face statement piece (hallways are utilitarian spaces — they don’t exactly need chandeliers!). I’ve been a fan of Schoolhouse Electric’s fixtures for ages, so when they offered to provide lighting, I chose three Newberry 4″ pendant fixtures in brass and these white glass shades. They arrived a couple of days ago, and they’re going to look fantastic.

The New Lighting for the Hallway

    (Oof, that belly. Almost done!)

We’re rewiring the house soon and getting rid of the old BX, along with any hidden knob and tube that’s still active (oh, the joys of old houses!), so we’ll have new fixtures installed then. We’re also having all of the switches on the first and second floors changed out for new push-button switches at the same time. There are a few original ones left in the house, and I love them! I’m so excited that all of the switches are going to match.

OK, and I have to share the new collection that Schoolhouse Electric just released this week. We’d been emailing back and forth about the lights, and they gave me a sneak peek at everything… and whoa. Way more exciting than finishing up a hallway! First of all, this bedroom is perfection. You know I love a good Jenny Lind bed, and a good floral.

My favorites from the new line are below. I want to put a room together around all of these pieces! Can’t you just see it? So awesome when a collection leaves you feeling inspired.

  • Choosing Our Hardwood Flooring for the Hallway

Choosing Our Hardwood Flooring for the Hallway

When Brandon and I bought our Victorian, we knew that the flooring in the hallway on the second floor would need to be addressed eventually. There are a couple of soft spots with noticeable give, and our home inspector estimated that we could probably go five-or-so years before replacement/repair would be necessary. The floor hasn’t gotten any worse in our year of living here, but since we were opening up the back of the hallway and putting in new flooring, we thought we may as well choose new flooring for the entire hall now.

    Hallway: Old Floor

    Hallway: New Floor

Our contractor’s schedule is usually booked up pretty far in advance, but he was able to move our remodeling project up so that construction on the hallway and nursery could be completed before baby number three arrives. Putting in the new flooring throughout the entire hall isn’t as pressing as the rest of the project was though, so with the major work already done, we’ll have our guy back out in a few months to finish up once his schedule has been cleared. I don’t expect our flooring choice to be discontinued anytime in the immediate future, but just in case, we’re going to buy and store the rest of the wood needed to complete the hallway so that everything will match. There is a significant difference in the thickness between the new and old wood, but we’ll keep a runner over that transition for now so that nobody trips or stubs their toe.

Selecting the new flooring material was up to us, so that we could choose the type, style, and finish ourselves. I asked if he had a recommendation for where to look, and he said that he had been referring his customers to a relative newcomer, Floor & Decor. I wasn’t familiar with them before that day, but coincidentally, I had received an email that same morning about their fourth Chicagoland store set to open in Skokie on the 12th. They were interested in working together, and after visiting (and liking) the Lombard location per my contractor’s recommendation, the timing worked out perfectly to partner on our hallway project.

Brandon and I chose a prefinished wood floor for ease of installation, and we also picked up an underlayment to muffle sound. I was a little worried that the micro-beveled edges on the wood planks would bother me since I like the smooth mirror-like finish of flooring that has been finished in place, but the floor looks great. I didn’t want a jarring change down the hallway, so I chose a color and wood that was similar to what we already had throughout the house: Gunstock Oak. I also went with the skinny 2-1/4″ planks to match the original floor as closely as possible. The hardest choice to make was whether we wanted engineered or solid hardwood. Engineered wood floors cost less, and there are some great quality options out there, but the longevity of solid wood won us over. Hallways are high-traffic areas and solid wood can be refinished multiple times over the years if need be, and it felt like a more appropriate choice for the house.

The old flooring still needs to be replaced in the original part of the hallway of course, but it looks fantastic already. So exciting to see the hall being returned to its original state and configuration!

    A Classic Bathroom Design

I chose matching bridge faucets from American Standard for the utility sink in the laundry room of our last house. When I shared the finished room on the blog, I wrote “that’s pretty much my dream sink and if we ever leave this house, it would be one of the things I’d miss most.” And I do! I miss that awesome setup.

    Making it Lovely's Laundry Room

Having liked my American Standard faucets so much, I was happy to accept an invitation to see their DXV line at a local showroom, so I visited Ferguson in Downers Grove.

    Ferguson DXV Showroom

The DXV line has over 70 products (like freestanding tubs, toilets, sinks, and faucets), grouped into four broad styles: Classic (1880–1920), Golden Era (1920–1950), Modern (1950–1990), and Contemporary (1990–today).

    DXV, American Standard

The Classic series had some of my favorite offerings — fixtures that would be right at home in my Victorian. Plenty of things that would have been right at home in our old house, too.

    DXV Faucets

The Wyatt toilet and sink are from the Golden Era collection — another favorite. The console sink was paired with a more modern faucet than I would have chosen though. Wouldn’t it be perfect with one of their more vintage-style faucets and a great wallpaper in the room?

    DXV Wyatt in the Showroom

When I got home from the showroom, I started thinking about how I would design a bathroom around those same base pieces. I’m drawn to old houses with period details, but I don’t mind mixing different elements in as long as the look is complementary. I went with a subdued palette but still played with texture and pattern to bring in some design interest. And a quick note on the wood floor: I’m aware that it is not the best flooring for a bathroom! We have it in each of our bathrooms here though and I’ve grown to love the look.

    hr 644

My mom’s best friend had a son, Bobby, who was a year younger than me. We played together all the time, and my favorite of his toys was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles play set. It was sort of like a dollhouse, but instead of being pink and girly it was set in a sewer — and it was awesome. I loved the Turtles! I remember standing in a line that stretched a block away from the theater to see the movie when it came out, and I still know all the words to T.U.R.T.L.E. Power. I had the soundtrack. I had the video game. I even got my parents to take me to a live-action TMNT performance.

When August started expressing an interest in the heroes in a half-shell, I was maybe a wee bit into it.

    TMNT
    August

Eleanor started kindergarten on Monday, and August doesn’t start nursery school for another week. E absolutely loves school, but the transition for August has been rough so far with him missing his sister. To give them both something fun to look forward to this weekend, Brandon and I decided to throw a little back-to-school party. It will be low-key with just a few kids, but we still want to make it special for them and we’re going to decorate with a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme. Eleanor likes that they’re ninjas, like she is, and August just thinks they’re awesome. Plus we get to order pizza! After all, “these ninjas are into pepperoni and cheese.”

Playing with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The kids have been having fun with their Ninja Turtles toys and those will make an appearance at the party this weekend, but I also have some decorations and activities in the works. I’ll share the details next week!
