Our first pair of foster kittens were adopted quickly, but we’ve gone on to take in two additional pairs of sisters, bringing us to four foster cats currently in the house (in two separate rooms).

The new kittens were sick when we took them in and they’ve been here for a few weeks. They’re so much better now! They’re scheduled to be spayed next month and then they’ll need some recovery time before they can be adopted; I’ll let you know when they’re available. (That’s one of them in the photo.) But the two we just got are older, a pair of 10-year-old sisters and they are absolute sweethearts! 💕 They are affectionate as heck and have been good with the kids, but they’re afraid of dogs so not a good match for us long-term. If you’re in Chicagoland and looking for a couple of lap-cats to keep you company, consider Shortcake and Biscotti through the @animalcareleague!

My name is Erin and I live in a suburb in Atlanta by way of Chicago. I am a self proclaimed DIY expert and extreme busy body. I share my home with my 6 year old son, husband, and 2 dogs. Our home was built in 1996 and we bought it as a foreclosure in 2011. I want my home to feel lived in and loved and hope each project that we do accomplishes both. For far too long, Black voices have gone unheard, even though they’ve been using their voices loudly for centuries to enact change. Today, more than ever, it is NECESSARY that we create a unifying action to center Black lives, stories, and calls to action. We need to listen to Black voices. This is why we have chosen to #ShareTheMicNow.

Inspired by the original @sharethemicnow initiative, tomorrow, Black professionals in the home industry will speak from the Instagram accounts of non-Black peers.

I’ll be turning over my account to @liveprettyonapenny.

The intention of this campaign is to magnify Black voices and the important work that they’re doing in order to catalyze the change that will only come when we truly hear each other’s voices.

Things looked better before last night’s storm pretty much wiped out the peonies’ blooms, but the garden has grown into a lush abundance that suits the house nicely. 🌿🖤

I keep a “nope” list. I’ve been at this long enough to see a new generation come in, trying to make it as influencers and making a lot of mistakes while passing it off as expertise. Giving bad advice, some of which will harm those who take it, is not something I ever want to do. Nope.

Hey, well-meaning white ladies? We’re doing the same thing right now.

This can’t be perfect, but here’s the current “nope” list:
* Acting like it’s business as usual.
* Using trending social justice hashtags to promote your feed.
* Asking others, especially those most affected, to do the work for you.
* Centering your feelings in this.
* Arguing that people aren’t protesting the right way. * Gathering head pats for being “brave.”
* Making false equivalencies.
* Deleting critical comments. You are literally silencing voices.
* “I support the cause! But...” sounds a whole lot like “I’m not racist, but...” We hold biases we don’t want to and may not realize we do. Being called out on that will be uncomfortable.

And you’re smart enough to understand how wrong and hurtful the phrase “all lives matter” is, right?

Black lives matter.
