    Merry Christmas!

The tree is up, the garland is draped over our banister, and the fireplace mantle decoration is a little lacking. It’s Christmas, 2017 style! Mostly good, but with some disappointments. Such is life!

(Honestly, the home feels warm and cozy, and will even more so when friends and family arrive.)

Oh Christmas Tree! (Making it Lovely's Library for Christmas)

Things are very much as they were last year. A few new ornaments that the kids made are on the tree, but the rest are the same. The background has changed slightly, as we have our lovely rugs in the double parlor and custom pink linen curtains behind the tree. I am planning to have a custom curved curtain rod made for that bow window, so the too-slender rods that are there now are only temporary, but the effect is still so pretty.

The presents under the tree are looking cute too. White wrapping paper with gold foil (Sugar Paper sent some over and I liked it so much I went and bought some more) plus ribbon in various widths and shades of pink, coral, and red complete the scheme.

The library doesn’t need much more for Christmas, but I do tuck a some greenery and berries on top of the secretary on the other side of the room.

    Things Will Work Out

The stairs look as they usually do this time of year. They’re at their best for Christmas.

The fireplace, well. I was trying to work with the decorations we already had, but also to come up with something I haven’t shown before. If you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen the earlier incarnation in my Stories: white bottle brush trees a’plenty. I took them all away, changed it up to some greenery and my peacock, and called it a day. It’s a peacock forest scene? Not my best work, but what I really had in mind needed a beautiful, huge mirror.

    Christmas Peacock

    This was the vision.

    Christmas Fireplace Mockup

Still weird, but a prettier weird. So I think a giant Louis-Philippe-style mirror is in our future? Time to make that fireplace really shine like I should have from the start. (Not just for Christmas, obviously. The mirror will be a welcome year-round addition.)

And then outside the house looks like this. Hey there, roofers!

We have some house stuff to discuss, but that’s a story for another day.

    Merry Christmas!

A Fun Take on a Traditional Christmas Table

This post is sponsored by CarefulPeach and Juliska.

CarefulPeach is one of my favorite shops here in Oak Park, and they have a beautiful display wall of plates and serving pieces from Juliska right inside the front door. (You can see it in my 2014 post on local independent shopping.)

We’ve teamed up to bring you a Christmas table setting that mixes formal and informal, traditional and modern, and of course a bit of pink.

And yes, this is the first setting in my newly redone office! I love having the marble table as an alternative shooting space to the dining room. I’ve been bringing my lunch up here sometimes just because it’s so pretty.

I’m all for setting a proper table, but I broke the rules a bit by placing the butter knife on the napkin with the forks. I liked the way the details of the Berry and Thread flatware showed up against the red plaid! I also liked that it broke the formality of some of the pieces.

The pewter dinner plates and chargers are a popular choice in wedding registries at CarefulPeach. They mix well with everything from plain plates to patterned, and look equally good with silver and gold. (And they aren’t really pewter, in case you’re wondering. The name refers to the color and finish — they’re stoneware, as easy to care for and throw in the dishwasher as any other plate. They’re also oven-to-table and microwave safe.)

The Berry and Thread Snowfall Plates on top come in a set of four and the pattern on each plate is different. That little scalloped edge detail is awfully cute.

There’s a matching Snowfall Platter, too.

And this lovely Berry and Thread Hors d’oeuvres Board. I propped it up like a cutting board in an all-white kitchen like the cool kids do on Instagram, but clearly it deserves some yummy cheeses on top.

The white Christmas trees and oversized silver ornaments (plastic, but I assumed they were glass until I picked one up!) are also from the shop. They have tons of holiday decorations in to choose from but I liked these to brighten up the dark wood tones.

And those pink swirly glasses! Be still my heart. I’ve used the footed goblet and tumbler, but there’s a highball glass in pink too.

They’re my favorite part of the table, but of course I’m biased toward anything pink. They work for Christmas with the red plaid napkins, but I want to do an Easter table with them! Valentine’s Day! My birthday! Everyday is a good day for pretty pink glasses, really.

The beauty of everything is that it can all be mixed and matched together and with what you might already own. The Snowfall plates and plaid say Christmas and they can easily bring a little holiday cheer to a standard set of white plates, or add some of the pewter collection to your table for a different look. It’s all very merry.

  • Upgrading Faux-Fresh Christmas Garland

    Upgrading Faux-Fresh Christmas Garland

This post is sponsored by Dunkin’ Donuts. Every espresso at Dunkin’ Donuts is freshly ground and brewed for each drink and combined with steamed milk and foam in each of Dunkin’s espresso beverages. As I put a lot of thought and care into decorating for the holidays, it’s nice to know that the macchiatos from Dunkin’ that I drink as I work on the house are crafted with the same care!

Popping in today with a quick tip for making your faux garland look more lush and real. I kept thinking that I needed a new garland to get the look I wanted, when really I just needed to take the time to make the one I have work.

Christmas Garland on Victorian Wooden Staircase | Making it Lovely

I bought a bunch of inexpensive faux-spruce garland strands years ago. They were pretty thin so I tripled them up and added lights before draping the garland along our stairs, but I wasn’t thrilled with how skimpy it looked. I mean, it wasn’t a big deal — it still looked really pretty, but I knew it could be better.

We had fresh garland for our HGTV Christmas issue shoot, but we didn’t get to enjoy it for the holidays because the shoot was done in April! And in the short time that we did have the garland on the stairway, it had made a huge mess. With a cat, a dog, and three kids going up and down those stairs multiple times a day, anything that goes there is going to get jostled. Faux-greenery is far more hardy, so I took our so-so 30-foot garland that looked great but a little thin, and made it into something I feel really good about decorating with.

    Christmas Garland Upgrade

I already had most of what I needed on hand: our faux-spruce garland, florist wire, clear Christmas lights, and gold ribbon. I picked up some supplementary faux-fresh pine garland (that looks more like cypress to me, but I like it) and stopped off at Dunkin’ Donuts for a mocha macchiato before heading home to get to work.

    Sprucing Up a Christmas Garland

I took the 100-light strand of Christmas lights off of our spruce garland and laid the whole thing out on the floor to determine spacing for the new pine garland. It was an improvement, but we still had more of the faux-spruce and I liked the added fullness it brought. I wired everything together, starting at one end and spacing the connections about 12″ apart. I then added the lights back in, wrapping them in around the center of the garland a bit more tightly and using an additional 50-light strand.

    Working on Christmas Garland

I used coated picture wire to secure the garland to the stair railing, then added decorative gold ribbon. I also added a huge blue and white oversized ginger jar to hide the cords. Terrible placement with the aforementioned three kids? Possibly. It hasn’t been much of a draw yet — fingers crossed, that continues to be the case.

Christmas Garland on Victorian Wooden Staircase, Modern Copper Blu Dot Real Good Chair, Blue and White Pagoda Red Ginger Jar | Making it Lovely

Once you’ve got the base of the garland right, you can change it up. I had a few ornaments in there before, but I like the simplicity of just greens with clear lights. I may change it up from year to year though. It would be pretty with Christmas picks other greenery, winterberry sprigs, pine cones, or ornaments.

Decorating for Both Christmas and New Year’s Eve

This post is sponsored by Lowe’s. While this was a paid opportunity from Lowe’s, all content and opinions expressed here are my own.

The Christmas to New Year’s transition: it can be done! I cleared the sideboard in our recently finished front entry to create two holiday looks, keeping the same base for both — silvery faux-birch allen + roth candles and white cotton ball ornaments that look like snowballs. Then I made a few easy changes.

Turning Christmas Decorations into New Year's Eve Decor

I was eager to decorate the entry since we had just worked on the space, but these looks would work equally well for a fireplace mantel, console table, or even down the center of a dining room table.

    Christmas

A green wreath and red flowers bring in traditional Christmas color, and the rest of the decorations are in a palette of white, silver, and gold. The neutral base helped ease the transition to the other look.

Small allen + roth gold votive holders are standing in as vases, and I mixed in a few Holiday Living gold plaid ornaments to add more shine. A trio of silver Christmas trees add height, and their texture plays well with the faux-birch candles.

Those candles have such a nice glow. They have a realistic flicker too — my little guy likes to pretend to blow them out and then we have to time the off switch so he thinks he was successful.

    New Year’s Eve

Gone are the flowers and the wreath, along with the Christmas tree trio and the plaid ornaments. The most obvious addition is the backdrop of paper pinwheels.

I used two packs of pinwheels for a more full look. I also added a few more of the snowball ornaments to replace the plaid ones. There are two types in the mix — some made from cotton, and these Holiday Living white ball ornaments. They both look like snow and I like the variance in size and texture.

The simple wreath would have still worked for the New Year’s Eve style too, but allen + roth dots and stripes pinwheels are always so fun to break out for a party. They come with double-sided tape to stick them open, but we know the trick of using a paper clip instead so they’ll be reusable, yes? (If you didn’t, now you do.)

You can grab everything for these Christmas and New Year’s Eve looks from Lowe’s.

    Christmas Decorating, Simplified

    Bonus look number three!

I would do something like the above for a party, or if this was a purely decorative spot like the fireplace mantel, but here’s a quick shot of a pared back everyday version. We keep a tray on the sideboard to catch mail (because without it, paper will pile up and accumulate on any other available horizontal surface). The candles are going to be put to use elsewhere, the plaid ornaments will go on the Christmas tree, and the paper pinwheels are going into my party supply drawer.

This is how the front entry looks for us now, minus the stack of catalogs and other assorted mail that arrives daily. Simplified, but still festive.

Our Home, Featured in HGTV Magazine’s Christmas Issue

Someone from HGTV Magazine reached out to me back in December of last year. Would we be interested in having our home featured? Yes! Scouting shots were sent, the initial contact person passed them on to their editor, and by January we had signed an agreement. They wanted to feature our house “all dressed up for the holidays,” so they sent a wreath for the front door and arranged for an exterior shot to be taken while we still had snow.

Making it Lovely's Victorian Home in HGTV Magazine's Christmas 2015 Issue

There was an initial interview in March over the phone (how did you find your home, where did you get this, why did you decide on that, etc.), and then a date was set for the shoot in April. I spoke with Heather Bullard, the stylist, and she mentioned that boxes would start to arrive and I should just set them to the side. So many boxes! And rugs! (Because if there’s anything our house is lacking, surely it’s rugs.) I’m sure our delivery guy loved us — especially since he later picked it all up again when everything was being returned.

The Boxes Begin Arriving for Our HGTV Magazine Shoot

Four months and many phone calls, emails, and boxes later, it was time for the shoot. Our house was about to be filled with people from all over the country for a few days. The stylist and her assistants, the photographer, Kim Cornelison, and her team, and of course a team of people from the magazine. The Christmas trees (one large, one teeny) and all of the greenery was driven down from Wisconsin.

The stylists started with the tree and the brought bags of empty boxes wrapped in very cute paper. None of those ornaments on the tree were ours! That rug you can see peeking out isn’t ours either.

Bags of Fake Presents for a Christmas Photo Shoot

The library shot is my favorite. The brass coffee table is really a side table that’s usually tucked alongside the teal couch. The floral chair was swapped out for one stolen from the next room, and the pillows were mine except for the one trimmed in white ribbon.

Making it Lovely's Home Library in HGTV Magazine's Christmas 2015 Issue

The secretary got a bit of greenery, and the stylist grabbed a chair that’s usually in the dining room.

And here’s where the floral chair ended up. This shot is the strangest one to see because while the shell is the same (only the rug, coffee table, and three of those pillows were brought in for the shoot), the overall effect is that it’s my house… but not.

Making it Lovely's Living Room in HGTV Magazine's Christmas 2015 Issue

The fireplace looked mostly like it did when I decorated it last year. Same vintage painting of Venice with my sparkly HAPPY HOLIDAYS banner and vintage deer. Those are our stockings too, though we usually put five out — one for each member of the family instead of just the three kids. This shot was in the table of contents.

Our dining room is a chameleon. I change it up all the time with different tablecloths and settings, so while this room looks different too, it isn’t as jarring.

Making it Lovely's Dining Room in HGTV Magazine's Christmas 2015 Issue

Everything looks so pretty. And then behind the camera, you’ve got a whole lot of this going on.

Behind the Scenes at a Photo Shoot for HGTV Magazine

Photographing the House for a Magazine

Two more rooms were shot on the first floor, but didn’t make the magazine. One was the bathroom. The stylist brought in some flowers and a couple of pink towels — which led me to pick up a few pink towels of our own. I hadn’t shown the bathroom after doing that because I didn’t want to ‘scoop’ the magazine, but then the shots weren’t in there! And then the other room was the kitchen. It looked so cute the way it was set up. There was berry garland along the glass shelf in front of the windows, the counter was cleared and styled up with pancakes, and they brought in a colorful rug. I don’t know why the other shot was cut, but I heard that the kitchen didn’t make it “because it didn’t look kitchen-y enough.” Ha! Are hundred-year-old stoves not in these days?

Next is the entryway. That rug is one of two that I brought back with me from Morocco, but it isn’t practical to actually have it there — it would get trashed pretty quickly with muddy shoes and winter salt. They wanted to switch our usual runner for one of theirs though, and I suggested this one instead. That chair is mine too, picked up a couple of years ago at Divine Consign. It’s super cute but also super wobbly.

Family shot! ↑ Calvin was just a little peanut! He was six months old when we shot everything. I put him in a union suit, and the little buttons on the butt flap kept opening up.

Six Month Old Baby in a Red Union Suit

Heading upstairs. The bedroom looks completely different now! The only thing that remains is the wall color, which isn’t nearly as green in real life as it looks in the photo here (it’s more of a soft gray/blue.) We have, since the shoot, sold the bed, rolled up the carpet, and changed everything around. Aside from the wreath though, there wasn’t anything changed just for the shoot.

Making it Lovely's Bedroom in HGTV Magazine's Christmas 2015 Issue

Eleanor’s room looks pretty much like it always looks, with the addition of three DIY Christmas trees that I made a few years back. And the ‘e’ is balanced on her headboard but is usually on the wall.

Making it Lovely's Daughter's Bedroom in HGTV Magazine's Christmas 2015 Issue

The other bedrooms weren’t photographed, but the playroom on the third floor was. The play kitchen was moved and a little Christmas tree was setup in its place. The kids liked those bean bags and the magazine copy states that they’re their favorite spots for reading, but they were only on loan for the shoot and the magazine had them sent back along with everything else. The kids really did like them though, so I went out after the shoot and bought a kid-sized chair.

The issue is out now and the whole thing is fantastic, so please do pick it up and see it in person. Thank you to the team at HGTV Magazine for featuring our house! It’s an honor to be in the Christmas issue, and so fun to see our house in print, all decked out in its holiday splendor.

  • That’s a Wrap

    That’s a Wrap

This has been an excellent week for Calvin to go through sleep regression! You’d think a baby could get his act together by now, am I right?

Anyway, we’re on the other side of our big photo shoot. The house looked amazing, and I can’t wait to share the details and show everything to you! The photos are for a Christmas issue, so the good stuff will have to wait until it’s out, but here’s the tiniest of sneak peeks.

    Christmas Wreath

There was garland everywhere, wreaths in the windows, a fresh tree in the library (complete with tons and tons of wrapped empty boxes beneath), and a cute little tree in the play room. Christmas just seems to come earlier and earlier each year, doesn’t it? Right after Easter, in this case.
