Lessons Learned from a Hot Pink Room

I was looking at my fan deck, eyeing the pinks and thinking about how many colors I’ve used over the years. Most of them have been a success, but there were some definite misses. Let me recount a lesson I learned in 2006, pre-blog.

Before we bought our first house, Brandon and I lived in an apartment with a very permissive landlord when it came to paint colors. It was great! We were in our early to mid-twenties with free reign to choose whatever colors we wanted to live with. The living and dining room were purple! The second bedroom was dark blue, and later as my office/studio, pink! Not every room was crazy — I painted the bedroom a creamy white, and left the kitchen and bathroom beige. But then there was the back room. It was kind of a mudroom that had been created when the house, formerly a single-family home, was split up into apartments with separate front and back entrances.

Hot Pink PaintI had the great idea to paint that back room hot pink. It was a pass-through, not an everyday living space. Let’s have fun with it! Be bold! So I painted it, finishing up at night, and it wasn’t until the next day that I realized what an awful mistake it was. On a bright, sunny day, light flooded the room and the entire space glowed pink. It shone its bad-taste aura into the adjacent kitchen, making itself known anytime we so much as went to get a glass of water. I think we lived with the room like that for a week before I had my next brilliant idea: tone the hot pink down with stripes.

    DIY Striped Armoire Surprise

I spotted an armoire on Jubilee Furniture’s blog not long after Calvin had been born. I’d been looking for something to replace the storage we lost when remodeling the second floor, and this one was the perfect size. I suspected the quality may be lacking because it was priced at just $35, but it was worth taking a look at.

    Armoire (Before)

Well, the drawers are wonky, two shelves have been replaced with plywood, and the left door is badly warped. It may not be in the greatest shape, but it does have great lines and it was decent enough to work with — especially since the price was right. That streaky faux-finish had to go though.

    DIY Striped Painted Armoire, After

Much better! The doors are not perfectly smooth but the armoire has been moved to the hall where the light doesn’t hit it directly, and its imperfections are much less noticeable. I wanted something dark (but not black), so the color I chose was Shaded Fern by Glidden® and Brandon did the painting. But for the inside, I thought, why not have a bit of fun?

    DIY Striped Painted Armoire, After

Whoa, that’s a whole lot of “fun.” Now you know why I’m calling this a Striped Armoire Surprise! Here’s how it was done. After priming the inside of the armoire, each compartment inside got a different hue. The colors used were Peach Daiquiri (pink), Extra Virgin Olive Oil (yellow), Crisp Linen White, Sea Spray (blue), Shaded Fern, French Stripe Red, and Safari Green — all Glidden® colors.

Paint Colors and ScotchBlue Painter's Tape

I used painter’s tape (ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape Delicate Surfaces with Advanced Edge-Lock™ Paint Line Protector 2080EL) along with a paper template to mark the diagonal lines on the doors. (The extra pieces you see are the ones I used for the spacing — obviously they were removed before the stripes were painted.) The drawers were painted white and then taped off horizontally with a thinner tape for variation.

    ScotchBlue Painter's Tape

I bought a pint of each color in a satin finish, and I have plenty of paint leftover.

    Red, Yellow, and Pink Paint

After three coats of paint for each of the first half of the diagonal lines, I removed the tape and let the paint dry completely (at least 24 hours) before taping off for the new stripes the next day. It was easier to use the thinner tape this time, aligning one piece to the top of each stripe and another to the bottom, rather than trying to perfectly fit one piece of thick tape along the entire length.

    Removing the ScotchBlue Painter's Tape

The colors are so bright and cheery! It would be a little much for my taste to do this treatment to the outside, but I love it as a surprise when you open up the doors.

  • The Antique Striped Sofa

    The Antique Striped Sofa

We’re accumulating couches here. I think you’ll understand why when you see the newest arrival.

I mentioned wanting a striped settee before moving into this house, and Samantha spotted this antique striped sofa on Chairish for me. It was larger than I was planning for, but it was so perfect and I was afraid someone else would snap it up, so I bought it. Delivery took a few weeks, but it’s here now and it’s gorgeous.

    Striped Antique Sofa

I’d like a pair of chairs in front of the curved windows, or maybe a round table for playing games, so the sofa won’t be staying where it is permanently. I’m not in a rush though — I’m looking forward to playing around with layouts and experimenting a bit.

Oh hey, I potted my small fiddle leaf fig. The planter had a bird’s nest fern at the old house, but it didn’t survive the move.

    Twin Beacons Brass Lamp

    Details

And that light! I’ve wanted that twin beacons brass lamp since I had pinned it and posted about it on the blog, two years ago. It was something like $800 at the time, so I skipped it, but then I spotted it on clearance all this time later for $250. I figured that was a fair price, and I was blown away by the quality of it when it arrived. It’s big! And heavy! And perfect! It reminds me of an insect (a praying mantis, maybe?), but I tend to like that in lighting.

This house, she is going to be good.

  • The Double Parlors, Shortly After Moving in

The Double Parlors, Shortly After Moving in

A lot of our furniture is working well in the new house. I’m OK with furnishing slowly and taking my time to find just the right piece, but I sort of went nuts with new stuff in the living/family rooms, double parlors, whatchamacalits.

I ordered the much-waffled-about teal sofa before we moved in. No regrets there.

    Second Parlor

The child-sized wooden rocking chair belonged to Brandon’s mom when she was a kid, and she gave it to us for the new house. Yay for good hand-me-downs!

    Antique Rocking Chair

I feel like that second parlor is coming together pretty well, even though there’s still a lot to do.

The first parlor wasn’t looking so hot though. So here’s where I’m all “I’m a blogger! I must document everything!” These look awful, and I know it.

    First Attempt at Arranging Furniture

Welcome to brown and gray town. We had that rug in our bedroom at the old house, but it’s probably going to go in August’s room soon. It’s a little small for the front room, and the color isn’t working for me.

    Brown and Grey Town

I tried arranging the couch along the window wall, but thought it would be weird to see two sofas aligned. Confirmed.

    Failed Floor Plan

The TV stand was a little dinky on that wall. I also tried it on the adjacent wall, but it didn’t look any better. I put it on my ‘replace eventually’ list, and I had in mind a faux printmaker’s cabinet (something like this or this).

    Not Looking so Good!

I wasn’t in a hurry to buy, but when I went out to the Land of Nod outlet to pick up a bed rail for August, I stopped in the Crate & Barrel outlet next door and found the Blake Media Console for half-off.

    Blake Media Console

The outlet box underneath needs to be hidden better and I want to stack some nice big art books up top, but I think it looks great so far. But then I also ordered a new rug — the one I asked about on Facebook. Buy all the things! That’s my new motto! (I’ma need to stop buying all the things.)

Hello, new rug! I’m not sure about you yet.

    Double Parlors

It works with the blue sofa in the next room, and I like having that visual connection, but it does not work as well with the crazy floral chair. And I like my crazy floral chair.

Crazy Patterned Rug, Crazy Floral Chair

(The cats and the dog do approve though.)

    Kili

Elsewhere, I seem to have a lot of this going on.

Teal Plus Black and White Stripes

I feel like the stripes may not go all that well with the rug either. And I like my stripes.

It was on sale, and I used my Anthro birthday-month discount for a further 15% off, but it still wasn’t cheap. I think it would look great upstairs in our bedroom, but then we would still need a rug downstairs, and I’m not planning to buy many more big-ticket items for a while. What do you think? Keep the rug where it is, move it up to the bedroom, or just return it?

This might be a whole lot of crazy right here, even for me.

There's a lot going on here.

  • Stripes Wanted

    Stripes Wanted

The new house needs a little striped settee. NEEDS.

    Striped Settee

These matching striped sofas are pretty fantastic too (though larger than what I’m looking for).

    Striped Sofas

I think the key is going to be finding a vintage piece with interesting lines, that would be a good candidate for reupholstering. It’s just not the same with, say, a new chair. The seating needs to have some curves and some quirk.

We’re out of this house next week, and then we’ll be heading up to Northern Wisconsin. I want to hit up the antique shops in the area because I have it in my head that I will be able to find veritable treasures there for like $2. I’m sure it won’t shake out that way, but a girl can hope for some thrifting luck.

  • A Striped Rug for August’s Room

A Striped Rug for August’s Room

So, I bought this striped rug for August’s room. It was on sale, 50% off (still is), and I was blinded by a sense of urgency. Must buy now, before it sells out! (It’s still available.)

    Striped Rug in August's Room

It arrived, and I like the scale of the stripes. I like the color (the darker stripes are more charcoal than black). Here’s what I’m not liking so much: it’s not very soft. I knew it wouldn’t be plush — it’s a dhurrie — but it’s a smidge scratchy. And when I vacuum it, it gets all caught up and bunches like crazy. Annoying.

Dwell Studio Draper Ink Striped Rug

Also, how did I forget that I bought a twin-sized blanket with brown and white stripes for his room? August and I have snuggled under it in the rocking chair together as we read bedtime stories for the past six months! Brown can often be paired with black, but not in this case.

Striped Rug Vs. Striped Blanket: Who Will Win?

So I’m not sure I’m feeling the striped rug in there. I put it down without a rug pad, but I’ve since purchased one, so I’ll see if that helps with the vacuum slippage issue. The rug isn’t terribly rough underfoot and August isn’t a newborn so it’s less of a problem now, but I wish it were a little softer. And then there’s the clashing! Rug vs. Blanket! Stripes vs. Stripes! Who will win?

p.s. Prepare thyselves for striped rug overload right this way! I’m considering this runner for the kitchen (such a good price).
