Talking Rugs and Lighting (Aren’t I Always?)

The closet is looking good, and it’s so close to being done.

    Closet Sneak Peek

The couple of sneak peeks above are on Instagram, and if you follow me on Snapchat, you might have seen the design plan for the closet. I was thinking of using a pink rug and bench. Either something all pink like Pottery Barn’s Leila tufted rug, or in a pattern that features the color prominently like Caitlin Wilson’s Kismet rug. We had an antique/vintage (no details on how old it is) Tibetan meditation rug in the hallway though that’s mostly red with a little pink, and it looks great in the closet. Our hallway is a bit more naked now, but that hallway is in serious need of repair right now anyway after all of the rewiring work on the second floor (another story for another day).

    Small Patterned Rugs

I ordered a small tufted ottoman from Target in pink that hasn’t arrived yet. Then I saw the same ottoman in the store in a pretty grayish blue color that hadn’t been listed online. I brought it home yesterday and the other is due to arrive tomorrow, so I’ll keep whichever is better with the rug.

Which means there are only three more things to do, and then the closet is done!

    1. Sew a sink skirt.
Easy enough, I was just waiting on the rug so I can choose fabric. Moving ahead with that one.

    2. Hem the curtains.
      Easy peasy.

    3. Find a new light.
Not so easy, but it needs to happen.

Yeah, so the light. I put up one of the fixtures from downstairs because why not? I’ll tell you why not: it’s way to low and I bump into it constantly. I knew that the scale was wrong, but I figured it would be fine and buy some time until I found something else. It wasn’t a visual assault on my eyes or anything, it just looked silly, being to big. I failed to take into account how annoying and potentially dangerous it would be — I’m worried I might break the glass.

I came across this image that I posted here in 2011, before I had ever set foot in our Victorian.

    New York Brownstone Entry

Beautiful, right? And I’ve been so drawn to that simple style of lighting lately. I want to replace our foyer pendant and was considering something similar, but now I’m also considering it in a smaller, semi-flush mount version for the closet. I’m still not 100%, but I think it could work.

  • Coulda Woulda Shoulda

    Coulda Woulda Shoulda

    Alternate title: Photoshop is Fun!

You saw the library last week, yes? The rug was on loan for a styling competition and it’s already on its way back, but the chairs that were supposed to be temporary are going to stick around for a bit longer. They’ve actually come in handy and the kids really like them! Well, that, and I totally lost the tags and receipt. What’s up, new chairs?

Making it Lovely | Anastasia Loloi Rug

No, I didn’t intend to keep them. I picked them up in the first place because they were:

    • the right color
    • cute
    • in stock
    • affordable
    • returnable

    But also:

    • the wrong finish (those silver legs)
    • don’t look inviting / right for a library
    • too modern / not interesting enough = looks cheap in context

They’re staying, for now, but I wouldn’t hesitate to sell them off at a steep discount. My loss, my mistake.

And here’s the thing. You know how you might kind of suspect something (ooh, those chairs aren’t as good as they could be), and then you have this weird job where your house and everything you do to it and put in it is shown to tens of thousands of people every day?* And then the choice you were least confident is indeed the thing people pick up on and don’t like? Yeah, that.

“They don’t really go with anything in the room and seem like nothing more than a last minute attempt to add a vibrant color to a relatively toned down room as well as looking like they ran out of money right at the end.”

Oof. I know. So here’s a little peek behind the curtain at what I would have really wanted to do for the rug shoot, had time and money not been a factor. (Aren’t those always the deciding factors?)

    * Psst: I do love this job. I can take constructive criticism just fine (or worse), so I’m not complaining! Plus there were plenty of lovely, nice, complimentary comments as well. But you have to admit, it is a weird position to be in, right?

First up, the Roadhouse Leather Chair from CB2. I’ve written about these before, and a few other similar options. I would have gone with these, had they been in stock. It’s a lot of brown, but the leather adds a different texture that I like a lot.

    Roadhouse Leather Chairs, CB2

Continuing on in that vein, we have another leather option. This time, the Baldwin Armchair from Jayson Home. I wouldn’t have been all that interested, having only seen them on the site, but in person they’re fantastic. Great scale, rich leather, just a nice, versatile chair.

    Baldwin Leather Chair, Jayson Home

That Eames rocker in the background does not go well with these. Ignore it. (It didn’t make the final shot anyway.)

How about some Wishbone chairs? I’ve always liked the look of them.

    Wegner Wishbone Chairs

Nice, but they’re not really working here. Hoffman Prague chairs instead? Those are great too.

    Hoffman Prague Chairs

I like those. Definitely more “dining room” than “library” but that’s OK. I was staging it with glasses and plates. Thonet, windsor chairs (and modern interpretations like West Elm’s Scissor Spindle dining chair) — they all have a similar feel, just a tweak to the overall look. We’ve got a lot of mockups happening already here; let’s move on to something different!

Stripes! I may sell the striped sofa at some point (too long for the space). Go with these instead?

    Anthropologie Grassland Striped Dining Chairs

I like them, but I don’t love them. Maybe a couple of these hostess wingback chairs from World Market. They’re a little larger, so just a pair instead of four.

    World Market Wingback Hostess Chairs

The color isn’t really working with that rug. Something darker, but still with some blue to reference the sofa. Like this.

World Market Wingback Hostess Chairs and a Loloi Journey Rug

Ah, but that kind of defeats the whole purpose of the shoot then, doesn’t it!

OK, we’re getting closer. I like the wingback and I like the upholstery, but it needs to be a different color. Restoration Hardware offers some nice fabric options, and I’m fond of their 1940s Wingback side chair. In blue? Charcoal? Mustard velvet! (OK, I’m probably the only one that really likes mustard/ochre/shades of brown/tons of wood. But so what? I’ll own it if I love it and nobody else does.)

Restoration Hardware 1940s Wingback Fabric Side Chair

Except those are all custom orders, and they would take too long. Plus, then they’re ours for keeps and whoa whoa whoa, what’s all this talk about commitment?

What’s that, Target? Your cute chairs are $40, the right color, and you have them all in stock ready to go home with me immediately? All right then, sold. And since I’m a scatterbrain lately, they can stay for now. At least it won’t sting too badly when the kids inevitably drop a marker on one of them while coloring — although that only ever seems to happen with the super nice things you pine and save for.

Now on to the important stuff. Which chairs are your favorite? And did you know that after making a bunch of these and coming across a chair I wanted to mockup that didn’t have the necessary alternate angles, I briefly thought I could turn it around in Photoshop so we could see more of the front?

    Styling Anastasia

You remember the blue Journey rug from Loloi that I styled a while back, right? I love the chance to play dress-up with my house, so I was excited about switching things up with another room.

And guess what — this is a competition.

Loloi Anastasia Rug in Making it Lovely's Home Library

To celebrate the line’s release, Loloi invited eight design bloggers to participate in a styling contest. Super fun, but the best part is that the winner will get a $1000 donation made on his or her behalf to the charity of their choice! A win for me would be a win for Rebuilding Together. They work with low-income homeowners, bettering their houses and their communities at the same time.

    Loloi Rugs - Anastasia

The Anastasia collection features traditional rug design elements made modern in scale and in the patterns’ distressing. There are bold colors (indigo, ochre, teal), but they’re tempered by creams and cool silvers. Our library has a whole lot of wood in it, especially from this angle, and the rug adds visual and tactile softness to the room.

Loloi Anastasia Rug in Making it Lovely's Home Library

Like last time, this rug is not a permanent addition (alas!). Nor are the chairs, which I added to echo the blues in the rug and pick up on the color of the sofa in the next room over. And since it’s a bit of a fiction, I set the table in our home library for dining — even though you guys know we really eat our meals in the dining room.

Loloi Anastasia Rug in Making it Lovely's Home Library

You have until midnight, October 14 to vote for your favorite room. Hopefully it’s mine (hint, hint) because I’d love the win for my charity, but everyone did an amazing job and chose equally worthy causes. Go check them out!

Rugs, Rugs, Rugs, Plus Plans for August’s Room

Staring at those photos of August’s room while I edited them and wrote up my post last week made it increasingly evident that the gray rug in there needed to go. I rolled it up later that day while Brandon had all of the kids at the park, and I rearranged the furniture while they were gone too.

August’s reaction could have gone two ways. Mild interest in the novelty of the new, or absolute hatred with a side of resistance to change. When he got back, I called him upstairs and told him I had a surprise for him in his room. I was met with a hug and the biggest smile. “Oh, it’s so beautiful!” Not what I expected to come out of his mouth, but I’ll take it.

    August's Room

I took the safety rail off of the bed when I changed the room’s layout, and I’m pleased to report that August has only tumbled out of bed once since then. He was so sleepy and out of it that he didn’t even remember it the next morning. Parenting win! (The kid was fine. You gotta learn to sleep in a normal bed some time, right? And anyway, his is super low to the ground, so you know. Not too far to fall.)

I brought in a white rug that we already owned so that there would still be a soft surface to play on (or fall out of bed onto). I feel like this is about as good as that wall color can look, and it’s not looking great. The curtains and artwork though, I like, and those are definitely staying.

  • Another Rug! (Yes, Again!)

    Another Rug! (Yes, Again!)

‘Tis what I do. I remember reading a blog post by Michelle Kohanzo (Managing Director of The Land of Nod) and loving that she describes herself as “changing rugs like most women change their sheets.” YES.

Anyway, with every tweak and addition (or take away), the double parlors are getting closer and closer to what I would consider done. After trying out the layered rug trend, I’m certain it’s not for me. I still wanted a rug down though, at least in the back parlor, and preferably something plush.

Ta da — plush, the right size, affordable (relatively), with just a bit of pink.

    Double Parlor with Parallels Rug

Obviously that’s not a styled photo (I held the camera in one hand and the baby in the other, and took a quick snap), but you get the idea. This is the rug, close up.

    Parallels Wool Rug, Macaroon Pink

I’m forever arranging and rearranging the library, wishing that black and white striped sofa was 18″ smaller, but it’s working. I’m thinking of adding a matching rug in there too. I only hesitate because really? A couple of huge, almost all-white rugs in a house with three young kids, a dog, and a couple of cats? Eh, I think it will work. They’re wool, which cleans up nicely, and we have a big runner in the entryway so nobody would be stepping directly on the white rugs after coming in from outside.

Pretend there’s a rug inside those two measuring tapes, deal? I think that having a rug to define the library’s floor plan will help. (Magically shrinking the sofa would help, too.)

    The Moroccan Rug

Black Walls, Teal Sofa, Moroccan Rug | Making it Lovely

The blue rug that I styled here recently, while beautiful, has been returned. Going back to bare floors was kind of sad! I’d had the Azilal rug that I brought back from Morocco down before though, and I figured it was time to bring it back.

Black Walls, Teal Sofa, Moroccan Rug | Making it Lovely

Pink Tulips and a Moroccan Rug

I’m considering buying the blue rug for the dining room if I want to hold off on wallpaper, but I haven’t decided yet. It’s out of stock in the size I would need, so I’ve got a little time to think about it. I am however keeping one of the pillows from before! It’s got all of my colors going on, and I love the texture.

Throw Pillows | Making it Lovely

The Moroccan rug is a decent size (6×11) for the back parlor, but I wanted to try out a layered look with a couple of pale pink flatwoven rugs. You’ve seen them before; I like them a lot, but I didn’t choose them and they’re a bit too small for my house. I lined them up to create a larger rug because I thought the colors and pattern would complement the Azilal, and layering it on top covered most of the seam. And our corner fireplace is always an issue with rugs in this room. These are thin enough that I can fold the corner under to fit, but anything thicker would have to be trimmed and bound to custom fit the space.

    Corner Fireplace

Oh, hey, different plant. I moved the other fiddle leaf fig upstairs to a window with the same exposure in hopes of letting it recover, but it’s not doing so well. This other little guy is happy though, and has sprouted new baby leaves toward the bottom! I need to properly plant him soon — the plastic pot it came in is just sitting inside there.

Black Walls, Cream and Pink Moroccan Rug | Making it Lovely

Anyway that’s how we came to have three rugs in the living room. None of them are perfect on their own, but together they’re better than the sum of their parts. I don’t know how long they’re going to stay like this though — the kids run around the house and as they run through the room, everything is kind of sliding around! (Rug pads aren’t doing enough to stop the problem.) It’s a good look, but maybe not the most practical for us.
