'F' for Furniture Brandon's Office

White Molded Chairs

Now that I’ve taken photos of Brandon’s office, I’m really hating the cheap (somewhat broken) office chair that’s in there. I’m looking for a new one that’s either white molded plastic or fiberglass. Unfortunately, most of the chairs that I like are a bit out of our budget! That said, here are nine options that I’ve been looking at, ranging from $14.99 to $1232 (a girl can wish)…

White Molded Chairs

1. Nelson Swag Leg Armchair, DWR $379
2. Saarinen Tulip Armchair – Vinyl, DWR $1232
3. JAKOB, IKEA $139
4. molded desk chair, west elm $149
5. Eames Molded Plastic Armchair, DWR $329
6. SNILLE, IKEA $14.99
7. orbit chair, CB2 $119
8. Saarinen Tulip Armless Chair – Vinyl, DWR $1152
9. Eames Molded Plastic Side Chair, DWR $229

I think I like the IKEA chair (#3) because it swivels, and it’s the closest to my actual favorite, the Nelson chair (#1).

I like #3 because of price and style/functionality in the room, but #7 is just way cool to look at.

My favorite is #1, followed by #3. I would get #3.

Since it’s going in a guy’s office I don’t think it should have high arms or be enclosed–just seems like a guy’s frame would have trouble sitting comfortably (and Brandon seems tall/big).

#3 is perfect–a bit of an arm so you don’t feel like you’re going to slide of the chair, but not high enough that you can’t spread your legs or slouch comfortably. :)

I think you’d be uncomfortable in the Ikea chair. Try looking into the Karim Rashid OH Chair – I have it in blue and I love it! It’s fairly affordable too. See it here:

I like #3 or #1…the can move and are more office desk-esque if that is a word! Good luck!

    Hi. I love your blog!
Eames shell chair is not that comfortable…So as all those plastic chairs you choose here.
Herman Miller used to make eames shell chair very comfortable with padded seating. I am not sure you would like to get a plastic chair for an office…
    Why not an Aaron chair?

Well, Brandon doesn’t work from home like I do, so I don’t think we need something as heavy-duty as an Aeron. Plus, I’m not crazy about the look of them! ;)

As long as the chair is comfortable to sit in for an hour or so at a time, that would be fine.

I suprised myself by liking #3 the most for the room.

I actually like #3 the best too! As for it being uncomfortable, I actually sat in the super cheapo ikea snille chair last time I was at ikea and fount even that surprisingly comfortable! I wanted it in hot pink, but Jeff wasn’t too keen on that idea (we don’t have separate offices like you!). But anyway, my point is that if the $15 chair is comfy, I would hope the $139 chair would be really comfy! And it really does have a great shape.

I really love all of these, except I don’t think any of them are comfortable for a large man to sit in. What does Brandon think?

Did you post your pink OH chair? I would love to see it.

I really love #3. It looks great an isn’t too expensive. We need a new office chair too, but my fiancé wants an “executive leather chair” (ick) because he thinks anything else will be too uncomfortable. Although, he doesn’t sit in the office very long, either, so I might have to make that point to him. I’ve thought about maybe adding castors to one of the wing chairs from either West Elm or CB2, so that it will be comfortable (read padded) for him, but still aesthetically pleasing. What do you think? Would that look OK?

Kate, that sounds like a great idea! Have you seen west elm’s garvey office chair? You might like it, and the castors are already there for you!

I’m voting for #3 as well. I’ve sat in #7 at CB2 and although it looks super cool, I didn’t find it very comfortable. A bit too hard to sit on and it was actually quite narrow with the high sides, so for a guy it might be too small.

I sat on the Snille chair at ikea, but the bright pink swively one and I was surprised at how comfortable it was. And how cheap!

I own the IKEA Snille chair, with a swivel base, and I love it. It has just enough give that it’s comfy, but not so soft that I can’t actually get my work done. I love how it looks very mod without looking like a designer knockoff. It’s well worth the $15 until you can afford that tulip chair!

i just bought #3 last week and am currentl using it as an office chair–it’s just divine! and i have a boy at home who uses it too–i think he’s more excited about it than i am. happy choosing!

I was just at Ikea looking for pretty much the exact same thing as you are. (I settled for the Snille due to budget constraints :) )

#3 is actually pretty comfortable as someone mentioned, and you can fit a cushion in their easily, which could make for a fun side-project too. Good luck! His office will look great with any of these.

Before making a decision, I would check out whiteonwhilte.com They have great peices (similar to DWR) at reasonable prices.

I use the Eames Eiffel side chair as my dining table chairs and constantly receive compliments on them. I wouldn’t sit in them for a long time, though, as they are not that comfortable. I agree with the consensus, #1 and #3 are the best. FYI, DWR has an Eames sale once, maybe twice, a year. If you’re going to buy anything Eames related, I’d hold off until then. Every penny counts! Great blog, btw. Am very much enjoying it.

i have an eames eiffel chair for my desk at work and i personally think it’s very comfortable. (i move around a lot, and don’t sit in one spot for long spans of time.) i also considered the swag leg chair, but didn’t want to contend with the arms all the time. the ikea chair (#3) is too much of a knock off of the nelson chair, for my taste. it would simply make me long for a swag leg chair every time i saw it.

Come on…. if it’s a serious office chair, you got to pick a serious task chair. none of those fulfill this requirement unless Brandon’s office is just for internet surfing at home.

Here are some better option under 1000 dollars:
Knoll Life Chair in Zinc ($899)
Herman Miller Aeron Chair in Zinc with Titanium Frame ($949)
I prefer Knoll Life Chair because I hate the mesh seat on the Aeron Chair. Both are handsome and comfortable and appropriate for the function.

We went with the IKEA Jakob chair (#3). So far, so good.
