A few years have passed since we last checked in on James and Eugenia, the fictional couple in this edition of Making it Yours. James’ mid-century rocker chair has served him well through many phases of his life. We first saw it in the living room of his bachelor apartment, and then again after Eugenia moved in. The couple had the chair in their bedroom for a while, then created a reading nook in their new place after they moved to Chicago. Now the couple has become a happy family of three, and they’ve moved the chair into their little boy’s room.
Orange (James’ favorite color) is back, though it’s a brighter happier shade now for a kid’s room. It shows up in the bedding, bedside table, and the floor bin that they fill with toys. Blue is a perfect complement to orange, and it’s on the walls, in the striped rug, and even in accessories like the lamp and clock. The simple bed is low to the ground and small in scale, so it’s the perfect size for a child’s room. Their little boy is a big fan of robots, and James and Eugenia are happy to indulge him. He has robot sheets on the bed, and a little robot coin bank on his nightstand. The Space Invaders style wall graphics are a playful addition to the room, even if the game was a wee bit before the boy’s time (he just likes the way the aliens look).
Making it Yours, Fifth Edition
We’ve seen the mid-century rocker chair in five different rooms now, completing this edition of Making it Yours. Remember, these looks are meant to work with any vintage or reproduction Danish Modern chair, whether it’s a rocker or not. Did you have a favorite room from this time around? I’d love to hear what you thought!

July 28, 2010 at 1:43 pmOh! I’m so happy they had a boy. I rarely find posts on decor for boy’s rooms and I have two of them so the inspiration is needed. I love the orange in the room.

July 28, 2010 at 1:56 pmThis is very sweet and very boy. I love that you have taken the orange into his room as well. I wonder how many rockers you have sold for U.O? I know I want one now, lol!

July 28, 2010 at 1:59 pmOoh! I really like all of these. And, we totally just bought that rocker in the new robin’s egg blue from UO! We have been eying it for a while and just couldn’t decide if the dark gray would work. The new color is on back order til late August but I can’t wait to see it in our guest room!

July 28, 2010 at 2:12 pmOoh! I didn’t know about the new colors!

July 28, 2010 at 2:01 pmI’m so proud of our decorating taste. Do I send little Percival to Montessori or Waldorf?

July 28, 2010 at 2:07 pmI love Making it Yours. I love this rocker from Urban Outfitters. You are making me love it more! I really want a true vintage one, though. I saw once at a vintage store once but passed it up because it was $125 and we couldn’t justify it at the time. The cushion was red vinyl. I’ll keep looking! I would chose the little boy room as my favorite.

July 28, 2010 at 2:19 pmmy little guy’s room is turquoise & orange and it’s become his life colors – everytime anyone buys him anything it’s in those colors. LOVE this room

July 28, 2010 at 2:22 pmLove this! {Mostly because I used similar colors in Finn’s room.}

July 28, 2010 at 2:35 pmI think my favorite was the Moving In Together segment… nice mix of color and style in that room! :) I normally stray from orange (it’s just not red, and red is my favorite! haha), but I liked what you did with it here! Beautiful work!!

July 28, 2010 at 2:40 pmLove this little boys room!! I love the “ugly dolls” on the bed, they are so cute!

July 28, 2010 at 2:40 pmOh my! This room is exactly what I wanted for my boys room! I’ve had those robot sheets marked forever and I keep trying to get them interested in robots with no luck. When I saw this room, I immediately squealed in delight! I would do this room in heartbeat!

July 28, 2010 at 3:59 pmWell done! Love the whole room! Any idea if that rocker is actually comfortable? I’d love to see a review since it’s not available in their store to try out.

July 28, 2010 at 5:27 pmMy sons room is done in robot theme and this is a perfect way to transition it to a “big boy” room for him. His grandma got him some adorable robot plates in Germany that we have hung in a row on the wall and then his bedding is a mix of dots and stripes. We also got him a robot lamp at urban outfitters last year for $10. I am going to have to incorporate some of these ideas once we move into our new place next month. Thanks Nicole!

July 28, 2010 at 5:35 pmI love love love these “Making it Yours” features! Kudos on moving a chair into so many kinds of spaces, too! :)

July 28, 2010 at 6:00 pmI love this little boy’s room! Probably because my 18 month old’s room is all robots and outerspace decor. Also really want the rocker- we never had a rocker when he was an infant and feel like we’re missing out. Also need the sheets and the wall decal and…

Not only do I have a little man (4.5), but I LOVE the orange/any shade of blue-combination! So this is more than perfect!

July 28, 2010 at 8:16 pmAhhh! I think this one is my favorite one with that rocker! Orange is my favorite color and I think that blue is a close second. And I admit, I have a thing for those ugly dolls, I just can’t help it. That’s one lucky imaginary boy!

July 28, 2010 at 10:36 pmI want that robot bank!!!

July 28, 2010 at 11:28 pmMy favourite is the library. It’s just something that everyone would love to have in their house if there was space. And it would also make a great escape from the kids if there was a big door with a lock! :)

July 29, 2010 at 12:04 amI love it when you do Making It Yours posts! They all were great options, but the lighter, brighter orange and blue make me happy so this last one is my favourite.

July 29, 2010 at 3:52 amI’m absolutely LOVING this room. I have been looking for ideas for my sons new bedroom and didn’t want the all too predictable blue or red. I was going to go with lime green and navy, but I may have to have a re-think after seeing this orange and light blue!
Thanks for the inspiration!
Jenn
July 29, 2010 at 6:22 amAin’t that precious?! I love the combo of blue and orange, and it would be adorable in a boy’s room. Nice!

July 29, 2010 at 9:18 amOh, I love this! I’m transitioning my son into a “big boy” room, and I was just thinking of injecting some orange into his aqua and lime color scheme. AND we already have some robot bedding (from Target, though).

July 29, 2010 at 10:47 amThis is my favorite MIY yet. I think I’m going to decorate my son’s room with robots when he moves out of his nursery… Your version is just about perfect!

July 29, 2010 at 11:19 amThey are all nice but the bachelor style was my fave.

July 29, 2010 at 12:47 pmI love the little boys room. Land of Nod has the BEST boy bedding. The robots were my favorite, but I ended up getting my son the Rock bedding because it was on sale SUPER cheap.

July 29, 2010 at 3:08 pmI love this. These are the colors I want to use for my kiddo’s “big boy room” when we decide to bring another one into the mix. Thanks so much for sharing this inspiration!

July 29, 2010 at 5:54 pmI loved this series! It gives me a lot of ideas for my Danish Modern chairs. The reading nook one is my favorite and I might have to implement that in my bedroom. Thanks!

August 4, 2010 at 1:31 pmI really love this. I love orange right now and I’ve been considering orange for my son’s room which I’ll be planning for the next 18 months :)
But, it’s hard for me to stray mentally from the traditional blue and red… My thought process so far –

August 4, 2010 at 1:43 pmHi there! this is my first time commenting on your site, though been a fan for a while :) I found you via Jules over at P&FF. Anyhow, this is my favorite room so far and I am stealing it! I am in the midst of moving my 3 yo little man into a big boy bed and your room has become my inspiration! I love the Robo bedding and quilt, but a little out of my price range since we are getting a whole new bedroom set, artwork, bedding, etc. So we went with a space theme in general with bedding I found at good ol’ Target, and I’m adding in the fun touches of an orange quilt (which is sadly sold out of Land of Nod until September), and the orange locker nightstand. I love that! Thanks so much for the inspiration. As soon as the boys bed comes in, we’ll start on the makeover!
