I’ve been wanting a pair of new glasses lately, so I thought I’d give Warby Parker a try. You get a pair of glasses with lenses for $95, and if you can try them out for free first. Sweet.
I really wanted the Fillmore style to work (remember, I included them in August’s style post?). I was hoping they’d be geeky-cool, but I don’t know if they work for me.
My shop assistant Erika tried them on and when I told her I liked them on her, she was incredulous. Her exact response: “Really? This is like the ‘before’ part of a makeover!”
So then I tried the Japhy frames because they come in pink, but I had to try them on in black because they aren’t sending out the limited edition colors to try. Yay? Nay? I think they’re nice, but a little average. Getting them in pink might fix that though.
And now I’m thinking I might like the Harper glasses in green, but I didn’t select those for my home try-on. Then of course, there are the free glasses… You know, the ones I’m already rocking. But where’s the fun in that, right?
I have to send back my trial glasses tomorrow, so I’m trying to make a decision. Seen any other cute glasses I should consider? Or do you like one of the pairs above?

October 4, 2010 at 12:16 pmOMG — Japhy in pink, for sure!
Robin
October 4, 2010 at 12:19 pmI vote pink, but I’m totally loving the rubber bands on the cabinet doors! Gee – I wonder what could make you do that? (says the fellow Mom of a 16 month old) Love it!
Making it Lovely
October 5, 2010 at 12:52 pmOf course the fellow mom of a 16 month old would notice that!

October 4, 2010 at 12:20 pm100% Japhy in pink!
annie
October 4, 2010 at 12:23 pmI like the first ones. Maybe you could get a pair of Japhy pink and then the Filmore, too, just in case?

October 4, 2010 at 12:23 pmI like the first ones!

October 4, 2010 at 12:25 pmI love the first pair! Very geek chic. And I’m a magpie for green – think the Harpers would look great too.

October 4, 2010 at 12:29 pmphoto #2 for sure.
Amanda
October 4, 2010 at 12:31 pm#2 for sure! I like them as is, in black.

October 4, 2010 at 12:33 pmjaphy gets my vote :)

October 4, 2010 at 12:34 pmThe first pair is totally adorable on you. Although I think my favorite is the third option in green, next choice would be the #2 in pink. Mine are similar to your #2 choice, but in tortoise shell.
Melissa de la Fuente
October 4, 2010 at 12:35 pmFirst of all…you look adorable! Your expression in the first photo is too cute! I say, because I love them & became obsessed with them when you put them on your faves list, get the PINK! I like the style on you & pink is well…perfect. ;) IMHO.

October 4, 2010 at 12:37 pmI absolutely love my Warby Parkers! I like the 1st pair or the Japhy in pink – or both! Thankfully they’re inexpensive, and they donate a pair to those who are less fortunate for each pair that you purchase!
katie
October 4, 2010 at 12:43 pmi really like the second ones–they’re nice in black, and if that’s a shade of pink that you know works on you then i’d say definitely go for it. =) the green ones are nice, too…i’m not such a fan of the first pair, though.
Kristin
October 4, 2010 at 12:45 pmI like the first ones too! You look adorable :)
Karyna {Paper Squid}
October 4, 2010 at 12:46 pmBoth cute but I vote for the 2nd one and I’d love to see them in pink!
Maureen
October 4, 2010 at 12:46 pmLove your current glasses, but I think the geeky-chic Fillmores work great for you, too. Just your fun, whimsy style.
Donna
October 4, 2010 at 12:47 pmThe second pair in pink! I’m sure you could pull that off. I have the Digbys and love them!
Making it Lovely
October 5, 2010 at 12:54 pmThe Digby glasses are cute… they remind me of my current frames.
Melissa
October 4, 2010 at 12:47 pmI love the first ones!

October 4, 2010 at 12:48 pmI must admit not really loving the first pair? The 2nd pair are cute though and sure the pink would be even cuter!

October 4, 2010 at 12:50 pmFirst Ones! Love geek chic!
Erin T.
October 4, 2010 at 12:52 pmI love your current glasses, but if you were going for new ones I’d have to say #2 (the dark color looks great on you!). I agree with the look on your face in photo #1… doesn’t look like you’re thrilled with them. :-)
Making it Lovely
October 5, 2010 at 12:54 pmYeah, Brandon told me I didn’t exactly level the playing field for the glasses by making that face!
jan
October 4, 2010 at 12:55 pmi like the 2nd image – and pink sounds like an awesome choice! too bad they didn’t make them like “mood rings” where they changed colour depending on ….etc……
; )
Making it Lovely
October 5, 2010 at 12:54 pmNow I want some ‘mood’ glasses. ;)
Emilee
October 4, 2010 at 1:09 pmI love the idea of the Japhy in pink. Also, have you heard of zennioptical.com. Love them. $8.00 glasses, and they’ve got some fun funky choices. Their customer service is terrible, so if you order is wrong, you really are best off to just reorder, but I have a pair very similar to the Japhys in red and green, and I love them. (Just measure a pair of frames you like and compare it to the measurements of the frames on the website.)
Making it Lovely
October 5, 2010 at 12:55 pmCool, thanks!
Kathy
October 4, 2010 at 1:09 pmAlthough you are way cute, I don’t think the first pair work quiet well with your face….a little too overpowering I think. The second ones are way cuter….and I think it would be ADORABLE in pink!
Cora D
October 4, 2010 at 1:13 pmThe green! The green! The green would look divine with your hair and porcelain skin.

October 4, 2010 at 1:22 pmno way!! my friend’s cousin is one of the founders. we all had a lot of fun trying on different styles at thanksgiving last year. =)
love the second pair!

October 4, 2010 at 1:24 pmMy favorite is the Harper in green. I like the Japhy a lot, but I in the light pink I’m afraid it will either blend with your pale complexion, or wash you out…
Karla
October 4, 2010 at 1:31 pmNot liking the first pair at all. I agree with Erika. Definitely the Japhy in pink.
Janet
October 4, 2010 at 1:36 pmHave you tried the optical department at Target? I’ve seen several pair that fit the budget and the hip quotient at the same time.

October 5, 2010 at 12:55 pmI’ve popped in there, but I haven’t seen any that I really love.

October 4, 2010 at 1:37 pmi think the fillmore are too round for your face – i’d vote for harper or japhy
christina
October 4, 2010 at 1:46 pm#2 is my favorite! the first pair is a little too “geeky”, (strictly talking about the glasses!!) for my taste! I’d love to the Japhy in pink on you! (I’m thinking about getting some new glasses myself, I know how hard it is to make a decision!)
JLR
October 4, 2010 at 1:48 pmThe Nedwin in green!
Debbie
October 4, 2010 at 1:48 pmI vote for the green!
Sarah
October 4, 2010 at 1:54 pmI love geek chic but I don’t like those ones… they make your cheeks look droopy (sorry!). I love the second pair and I think they would be really awesome in pink!
Marie
October 4, 2010 at 1:58 pmJaphy in pink, without a doubt.
Sara
October 4, 2010 at 2:03 pmI like the Japhy glasses. Very nice shape that compliments your face! Though I do like them in black and don’t think I would like them as much in pink.
Janice
October 4, 2010 at 2:08 pmSecond pair for sure. Then again, I lived through the eighties when big honkin’ glasses like the first pair were all the rage. So ugly!
Georgia
October 4, 2010 at 2:10 pm_Not_ the first ones! They may be IT for a “trained” crowd like the readers here, but shouldn’t glasses be a little bit flattering as well?
Making it Lovely
October 5, 2010 at 12:56 pmThat’s the problem. They’re definitely cool but I don’t think they’re flattering enough.
Kristy
October 4, 2010 at 2:12 pmI’m a big fan of geek-chic glasses, and need a new pair myself. Thanks for mentioning Warby Parker, I’ll check them out. The first pair doesn’t cut it, and the pink might be a little too pale. Go for the green or another darker shade.
Georgia
October 4, 2010 at 2:12 pmNice lipstick btw!

October 4, 2010 at 2:14 pmIt’s nice to see Japhy on a human being. I got the email announcing the special pink frames, but thought they were kind of hids in the photo. They look super cute on you, though!
I tried my darndest to order Harper in green last week, after I got an updated prescription. Unfortunately, I was not given my “pupillary distance”, and couldn’t seem to submit my order without it (even when clicking the option for them to contact my eye doctor directly). I eventually gave up. I hope your experience is better!
Making it Lovely
October 5, 2010 at 12:57 pmShoot, I wonder how old my prescription is. I might need a new eye exam.
b.a.
October 4, 2010 at 2:14 pmi have to admit–i don’t love the first ones. i think the second pair would be adorable in pink! but green sounds really cool too, and i think green would look awesome with your coloring. maybe i’m voting green?!
Tra Knox
October 4, 2010 at 2:19 pmNumber two definately! In black! Actually I think you can pull them both off but you look well cute in the number two’s!
KrabbyKasey
October 4, 2010 at 2:27 pmThe Fillmore definitely has the geek look going on, but it’s not my fave on you. The Japhy frames look nice, but they’re ordinary. However, I think my fave pick is going to be the Harper glasses in green because green is fun and funky! Everybody has black glasses, but not green!! Besides, if your hair were red again, green would look killer with your hair!
sunny
October 4, 2010 at 2:28 pm#2 in pink!
but also..I have the most adorable glasses from http://www.zennioptical.com in this deep pink/purple color that everyone loves. I feel so pretty and geeky in them :)
anyway – there are tons of choices. my glasses (prescription) were $11. love them. just sayin’.

October 5, 2010 at 12:57 pm$11 is a mighty fine price.

October 4, 2010 at 2:30 pmwalk on the wild(er) side + get pink in japhy! fun :) really, for that wonderful price, you could get more than one pair!

October 4, 2010 at 2:32 pmLove, love the first ones. I think you are brave enough to try something a bit more exciting than the second, which are great and suit you but safe
jennifer
October 4, 2010 at 2:34 pmyou look JUST like Lisa LaPorta (HGTV) in the second picture!! and i think i’ll vote for the pink Japhy ones as well.

October 4, 2010 at 2:35 pmI like the second pair best and pink would be super cute too. What about a pair of bebe frames?? I don’t care for the clothing line but the glasses, oh my. love them. (I used to have the bebe ‘get fresh’ in coco mint but i thought they where more green than mint) So many color/style options and they go on super sale all the time. You can never have too many bras or eye glasses :)
Amara
October 4, 2010 at 2:37 pm#2 in black looks great on you! Bummer, I just spent a boatload on glasses in Sept. I wish I’d heard about WP.

October 4, 2010 at 2:53 pmI urge you to try on Pink glasses before purchasing. I’m an Optician, and I can tell you very few people look good in frames that light in color. I’d also warn against online glasses, check out your local private practice. They often have wonderful warranties and better quality that will last you a lot longer.
I think you might like Pro Design frames:

October 4, 2010 at 2:57 pmJaphy for sure! I think pink would be fun!

October 4, 2010 at 3:07 pmI actually like both, but I really like the Japhy and I like them in black actually! You’re fair skinned so I feel like the light pink may not “pop” as much as the black do.

October 4, 2010 at 3:41 pmi actually kind of like how dorky the Fillmore style looks! hah! i just ordered a pair of “nerd glasses” from zenni optical (http://www.zennioptical.com/product.php?productid=1304&cat=&page=1) and they look absolutely terrible on me!!! hah! good thing they only set me back $26 after shipping!
my husband needed sunglasses and i ordered those from http://www.globaleyeglasses.com/ for $25-ish after shipping.
the thing i love most about these websites is that i can change up my look daily and since i don’t wear glasses full time i can leave a pair at home for emergencies!
Making it Lovely
October 5, 2010 at 1:00 pmOK, third recommendation for Zenni. :)
Allison
October 4, 2010 at 3:41 pmI think the Harper in green would be awesome on with your hair color…but seriously- at $95…get them both! You can’t even get one pair of glasses for as much as both of them together!
corrin
October 4, 2010 at 3:52 pmI adore Warby Parker. I visited their showroom when I was in NYC last month and tried on everything. I ended up ordering the Wiloughby in brown, the Morrison in green, and the Miles in black.
Heather K
October 4, 2010 at 3:54 pmI agree with Katie W. The Jophy style is good for the shape of your face, but not pink. My first vote goes to Harper in green. (BTW, I found your blog via Chookooloonks. LOVE your library!)
Making it Lovely
October 5, 2010 at 1:00 pmThanks!

October 4, 2010 at 3:55 pmOmg, I may be in the minority, but I LOVE the first pair on you. They make you look like Claire Danes in Shopgirl!
Danielle
October 4, 2010 at 3:57 pmDisclaimer: I wear these glasses (http://www.go-optic.com/DFRAMES/IMAGES/rayban_RX5154_2000.jpg), which may mean I just have really weird glasses taste.

October 5, 2010 at 1:00 pmNo, I like those!

October 4, 2010 at 4:15 pmI like the first ones!

October 4, 2010 at 4:42 pmI love the first ones! And you’ll still have your old pair if you want to be able to switch it up, so you wouldn’t have to be geek chick every day.
I may be a bit biased, seeing as I wear a pair of nearly identical black, round spectacles by IKKS. They’re wonderful and I always get compliments on them!
Nicole
October 4, 2010 at 4:46 pmI love the second pair!! They look really good on you
haley P
October 4, 2010 at 4:46 pmThe first might look different with a different face, but I’m pretty sure you’re right.
I love the Japhy, I think they suit you better than the ones you have now. I’m not sure about pink (not as sure about everyone else). Can you work some photoshop magic and let us see what the pink might look like? I think the black look fantastic. The pink might look a little too… elementary school or strange with your skin tone. The tortoise would probably great with your hair.
haley P
October 4, 2010 at 4:47 pmHaha, I meant the first pair might look different if you were making a different face… not if you had a different face. I need to learn to proofread better.

October 4, 2010 at 5:27 pmI think they are both too big for your face. I would pick the belen or cailin.

October 4, 2010 at 5:44 pmThe Harper glasses are too much like the ones you already wear. Go for the pink Japhy, I say!
Meggan
October 4, 2010 at 5:46 pmLoving the Japhy in black — They really suit the shape of your face! The Filmore pair is OK but in black there’s that fine line between geek-chic and Where’s Waldo.
christina winters
October 4, 2010 at 5:54 pmi think you would look cute in green nedwins! but those first ones you have on….your assistant was right haha :(
justme
October 4, 2010 at 6:02 pmThe second one in black. They are VERY cute on you. I personally am not a fan of colored glasses- they seem very “older woman making a statement” to me. Basic black, you can’t go wrong!
Kate @ Savour Fare
October 4, 2010 at 6:39 pmI have to give a shout out to Zennioptical.com — their glasses are around $10 WITH FRAME — if you like variety, that’s the way to go.
Leone
October 4, 2010 at 7:31 pmI gotta go for the green…love the shape and the color would be the bomb on you. Otherwise the 2nd ones in pink.
Little Edie
October 4, 2010 at 8:53 pmthe Filmore! The Clark Kent look is adorable on you and it is so much more distintive. The flip side is that in 15 years you will look back at photos and say … Oh god that was so 2010. I’ve got an adorable 80’s psuedo mullet and ginormous Varnet sunglasses that scream 1986. Good times.

October 5, 2010 at 12:26 amJaphy – Pink or your hair color. The first ones are too heavy. Why don’t you send for more and we can vote again?

October 5, 2010 at 2:10 amI second the Prodesign recommendation. I have #5113 in brown http://prodesigndenmark.com/Default.aspx?ID=114&GroupID=5000 and they are awesome. However, the nose pads on metal frames give me nose divots, so plastic frames are preferable if you also have that problem. I have five pairs of glasses; it’s harder to choose a frame if you’re only going to have one pair, but for your second (and beyond), you should go CRAZY!
I agree that the first pair above is not great on you. If the pink on the other glasses is a strong pink, then maybe… but they aren’t very interesting either. The Harpers are a better shape, and the green is great!
Claudia
October 5, 2010 at 3:46 amI would prefer the Japhy.
In the first photo you look like 15 (ok, maybe this is not a disadvantage) :D
I bought new glasses and checked at home that the new frame is similar to my old frame, just a lttle bolder and in other color. Ha! Didn’t notice at the shop…
So maybe this is a hint for buying new frames?
Viv
October 5, 2010 at 4:53 amYou look adorable in these photos. Japhy in pink for sure!
amyjk
October 5, 2010 at 8:21 amthe top pair are not right for you as they echo your face shape, and glasses should be the OPPPOSITE of your face shape to be the most flattering.

October 5, 2010 at 9:43 amI vote Japhy and I vote Pink. The square frames are more flattering.

October 5, 2010 at 11:56 amI am firmly anti-buying-rx-glasses-online. There have bound to be (locally-owned!) optical shops in your area that carry beautiful frames, and they’ll help you out if your rx doesn’t turn out right. Did you get your pupil distance measured so your online glasses won’t make you go cross-eyed? Maybe you could buy the frames online and have the lenses made locally? It’s more expensive, but it’s a better way to get glasses, and Zenni Optical and Warby Parker are located in states where there are weaker laws protecting optical consumers.
Sorry, but I work in optical and the ordering-online thing bugs me. But here’s a few frame lines I love:
http://www.ogiframes.com/
http://www.kliik.com/
http://www.etniabarcelona.com/
Also, the warby parker website tells you to tell your optician to avoid heating your glasses when they adjust them–this is simply not right. We only heat parts of the frame so they bend instead of breaking during adjustment. We never heat the lenses, only the frames; we know what happens to lenses when they get heated (I accidentally left my best pair in a hot car last summer. It was Bad).

October 5, 2010 at 12:39 pmI like the first choice. They are dorky chic. I do however believe that they are a look you have to own. If you feel confident in them, others will see that. If you don’t think you can pull it off, you probably shouldn’t get them. I always feel this way about personal style. You have to own your look. Which is something you seem to do. :)
