I’ve chosen orange for the new nursery. It’s such a fun, poppy color, and it could easily work for either gender (we’re having a boy!). Once you veer from pastels though, it’s hard to find essentials for the nursery like bedding and changing pads. Here are a few of the things I’m considering for the room:

October 18, 2010 at 10:33 amVery cute! We have some orange in our children’s room and it’s so bright and cheery (our four-year-old son and 18 month-old daughter share a room). We incorporated a little fuchsia for her and some green for him…both paired nicely with the orange.

October 18, 2010 at 11:08 amI might work in a little green too. Orange does play nicely with a lot of colors!

October 18, 2010 at 10:42 amYou should pick up some vintage/retro pieces on Etsy! There are so many boho 70’s pieces that would add so much character to the nursery too.

October 18, 2010 at 10:54 amWe LOVE LOVE LOVE orange here. My dining room is orange -it’s supposed to make you hungry and I thought it would encourage my children to eat their dinners! So far, so good. Now they’re eating me out of house and home!
I appreciate that you are not doing the same old pastel thing. I get really tired of seeing that. Orange is happy color and I love everything you chose. Green or blue -either would be great with orange.
Enjoy!

October 18, 2010 at 10:56 amI had A LOT of orange things when I had my son 3 years ago. Orange & gray stroller, orange & brown bouncer, the full-size bed in his room was done in brown, orange, & green… I loved how the warm color blended in with other warm colors in our home but was still bright & fun for a baby.

October 18, 2010 at 11:06 amOrange is my favorite color! Perfect for a baby! Are you planning on handing down Eleanors crib or buying new?

October 18, 2010 at 11:08 amWe’ll use the same crib. The major furniture pieces are staying the same (with the possible exception of the dresser).

October 18, 2010 at 11:10 amI love the ORANGE idea. You might want to check etsy and put in orange as a search filter. There are a few things I saw there that might be nice in your nursery. I think one was an owl print on fabric? Maybe

October 18, 2010 at 11:14 amMy nursery/first bedroom was orange and I loved it. I had great alphabet and number wallpaper, too. Now I’m feeling a little sentimental, going to have to look for pictures!

October 18, 2010 at 11:33 amWe did aqua & orange for our son’s nuresery. It was so tough to find stuff (especially trying to match aqua since everything is pastel). Here’s some pics: http://bennettwilliams.wordpress.com/2009/03/19/nursery-2/. Happy planning!

October 18, 2010 at 11:43 amHi! I am delurking to say that my first daughter’s nursery was orange (and green, actually). Her bedding was from Dwell. It was the Motif in coral and it complemented her orange glider and orange/green/white Flor squares perfectly.
Baby sister is now using it and it’s in great shape.

October 18, 2010 at 12:09 pmI LOVE it! We did orange, blue and a hint of pink for our nursery (girl). And It was very hard to find orange accents! I am totally in love with the changing pad cover! SOLD!

October 18, 2010 at 12:11 pmI love that idea! Orange is one of those colors that’s been growing on me; I think it was my orange fiestaware that did it! It looks great with so many other colors.
Can’t wait to see what you come up with; I know it will be fantastic.

October 18, 2010 at 12:15 pmLove the non-pastel orange! I’ve run into the same problem with my nursery colour scheme and grandma-to-be has kindly offered to sew up some great crib sheets for us.

October 18, 2010 at 1:35 pmI’m doing an orange nursery too! well, more of a green nursery with orange accents. and i’ve had my eye on those same striped crib sheets – love them. we’ve decided NOT to find out the gender, so its been even more important to pick fun, gender neutral colors, and you’re right – its hard to find non-pastels. can’t wait to see how everything turns out in your little ones space!

October 18, 2010 at 2:55 pmHi Nicole,
We have an orange nursery for our daughter, Olivia. I was worried it was coming off as too masculine *we started before we knew the gender* so I threw some pink elements in.

Eleanor’s nursery was inspiration for our own so I know Baby Boy’s will look fab!! Looking forward to pics!!

October 18, 2010 at 3:13 pmHi! Just wanted to recommend the Hemmet Rug from IKEA! I bought it for my toddler’s new room and I am so happy with it. It is a great shade of orange, is wool, sturdy and you don’t see a lot of dirt! You can see it here: http://repurposedplayground.blogspot.com/2010/10/introducing.html

October 18, 2010 at 4:04 pmI love orange for a nursey- my favourite combo would be pairing it with turquoise or royal blue. I saw these two rugs in orange that I thought you might like-
1. http://www.jonathanadler.com/Zebra-Rug/?cat=486&initial=7823- pricey but adorable
2.http://www.modernchichome.com/DECORATING-Rugs/c1_49/p332/Arabesque-Rug-in-Coral-NEW/product_info.html
Or how about this wallpaper (I am using the white/turquoise colourway for my son’s nursery) by Hygge and West- sooo sweet.http://www.hyggeandwestshop.com/products/julia-rothman-for-hygge–west/daydream-wallpaper—blue/
Good luck putting the nursery together- there’s nothing more fun than decorating a little one’s room and I’m sure it will be adorable:)

I too am doing my sons room in orange, but can’t for the life of me determine how much orange. Stripes with taupe? Colour block with grey? Orange circles against tan? Half wall in orange…and the ideas go on. Did you finish it? Love to see it!

October 18, 2010 at 9:43 pmI think it will turn great! I think it is a really happy color!!! My only concern: I heard that orange and yellow are not the best choice for nurseries, since they may make the child more anxious… Do you really think it is true? ARe you painting the crib orange? I have seen such beautiful nurseries in orange and yellow….
Nicole
October 19, 2010 at 2:34 amWe had a baby who was the WORST sleeper (and her bedroom had terracotta orange walls). Nothing seemed to help and I really did try everything. Finally, I talked my husband into painting out the orange, since I had also heard about this being a bad color for babies, and miracle of miracles, the child now sleeps through the night. I can’t prove that the pale blue walls are the decisive factor, but if I were you, I might stick to orange accesories that can be changed out if you need to.

October 19, 2010 at 7:13 amLove to see that you’re doing a orange nursery!! I’m excited to see how it turns out, Eleanor’s nursery was beautiful! We are having a baby the end of March and I’ve already started planning by using a mood board. I’m doing Navy with accents of brown and pops of orange! My inspiration was the Keith Haring print Mother and Child. Check it out:

October 19, 2010 at 8:36 amHi Nicole: I love the orange nursery! I did a bright purple nursery for my daughter and also had to do a lot of searching for accessories, bedding, etc. that went with my color scheme as everything was lavender and the purple we used is much deeper. As a present to my daughter, I purchased custom bedding from etsy, as we were lucky enough to have everything else purchased for us.

I was so happy with the end product and they were great to work with!

October 19, 2010 at 12:35 pmI feel your pain – my daughter’s nursery is lime green. Like you said, it was a bit of a challenge finding the basics like sheets and blankets. The decorative stuff was way easier. I love your picks so far! And congratulations!

October 19, 2010 at 2:31 pmI love that color…I gave my son a room makeover with orange being the dominant accent. You can check it out on my blog. Granted it’s not a nursery, but you get the idea of the pop color!

October 20, 2010 at 5:39 amooh, love the orange nursery idea! I had been planning an orange & bright pink nursery, but by the time we bought our house and moved in and our daughter had a room of her own, she was eighteen months old and I was thinking of little girl’s grooms, not nurseries. So the orange and pink turned into coral. Still, I had a lot of orange ideas.
Someone else posted the Litto Magic Garden fish bedding, which is great stuff. Very high quality, adorable orange fish. Must get ready for work, but I’ll see if I can think of stuff later! Other than I adore this quilt, don’t know if you’re crafty that way or know someone who is, the fabrics are listed in the comments: http://www.ohdeedoh.com/ohdeedoh/little-stitches-2008-entries/amy-butler-little-stitches-for-little-ones-entry-23-baby-activity-quilt-064753

October 20, 2010 at 8:37 amLove this! I thought I should mention though that I have those sheets and they drive me a bit batty. They are super stretchy so they tend to bunch. Very soft but the stripes always look a bit messy. I thought you might like to know. Good luck with the nursery planning! I can’t wait to see it come together.

October 20, 2010 at 3:28 pmYou said you may work in a little green. I thought I’d share my idea, which you may love or hate. I love orange -bright orange, my fav. colour. But I love working it with the right turquoise, purple and grass green. I therefore love peacock feathers. If you look at alexander henry, he has an awesome peacock fabric, but the pattern is a bit big. And it’s ambiguous and bright, so very unisex. HOpe it helps inspire.

October 20, 2010 at 6:22 pmI’m de-lurking to ask if you’ve seen the Gossip Girl nursery. They have this ADORABLE orange monkey wallpaper that I have decided will grace the walls of my future baby’s nursery. If you do a Google search for Gossip Girl nursery you should find some inspiration. :)

October 20, 2010 at 11:57 pmglad to hear you are going with orange! we painted our nursery a bright sherbet orange over the summer when we had our ultrasound and our baby didn’t want to show us what it was (the ultrasound tech thought it was a girl but wasn’t reall sure) so we decided on orange because its very gender neutral- can go very girly or very boyish! everyone thought we were crazy for going with such a bold bright color but all the white molding and doors tone it down and we love it! since we did end up having a girl we added pink to the orange and white and its absolutely adorable! but i LOVE orange, blue, and green for a little boy!
