Here we are: the first look in the ninth edition of Making it Yours. We’re going to follow Adam and Sadie Green (our fictional heroes), newlyweds in their late twenties, who have just moved to San Francisco!
Adam is a game designer and a big fan of graphic novels, and Sadie is an elementary school teacher with a love of mid-century modern style. Adam had a job offer with a start-up tech company, so the two packed up and moved cross-country from Ohio to California this summer. Sadie will start at a new school soon, and the couple is excited about decorating their new one-bedroom apartment.
The new place is cute, but it’s small. They brought most of their old furniture with them, but the low and long vintage dresser they had in Ohio didn’t fit, so they needed something new. Sadie had seen the Sierra four-drawer chest recently, and even though it didn’t really fit the style of the rest of her furniture, she loved it and decided to give it a try in the space. Happily, it was just the contrast the room needed.
So young, so fun! Perfect for our couple. Next up, we’ll see the Greens’ bedroom a few years later.

August 2, 2012 at 5:20 pmI love the stories you tell with these, Nicole – I always kind of look forward to hearing where you’ll take them next.
(not least as my fiancé and I are late 20s, marrying next month, living in a small flat with a mish-mash of our older furnishings. Plus the kiddo though, so we’ve already started repurposing items for his room:)
I really like the buckle mirror and needlepoint pillow

August 2, 2012 at 5:33 pmWhat, no Dorothy Parker quotes? Oh, right, newlyweds;) love the dresser and I just ordered that print for my office.

August 2, 2012 at 9:07 pm<3 <3 <3 that pillow! When I saw it I immediately assumed it was a Jonathan Adler $100+ deal. But $29 plus free shipping is a GREAT find. Thanks!
PS — might just be my computer, but it looks to me like the right side column of numbers is cut off…can't see most of the "1"s.

August 3, 2012 at 1:27 amhahaha. Sounds familiar. Husband and I are late-twenties, just moved to a one bedroom apt in SF for a job in a tech start-up (husband).
I’d love a knock-off of those drawers. Still need to buy some…

August 3, 2012 at 8:42 amHeheh. This is cute. And almost us, two years ago, except that we were early 20s instead of late 20s and moving to Toronto, not SF. And we most definitely didn’t have nearly as much style!

August 3, 2012 at 10:57 amThe Duken bed is awesome! I love that the headboard cover can be removed/replaced. It looks like one could easily make additional covers in other fabrics. And for $200, not bad at all.

August 3, 2012 at 1:47 pmI have completely different aesthetic tastes than you in both home and fashion, but I LOVE following your blog nonetheless! You present your ideas with humor and creativity, so I keep coming back for more. And I think the monthly/yearly photos you did with Eleanor (and August) is sheer genius and pass your site along to every expectant mother I know :)

August 5, 2012 at 12:40 pmAdorable post first off. I just so wish this could happen for Adam and Sadie. The more plausible scenario is that given their jobs and income, they will most likely not be in a one bedroom apartment, but rather a studio for 1,600 a month.
My daughter and her boyfriend have been looking for an apartment all summer in SF and have not found one. Their max price is 1,700. We live out in the East bay so we know the market.
I went with them last week to look at a microscopic studio, and I could not believe that there was a huge crowd coming to see it. Your post reminds me of one couple I saw that turned in their application. They were in their late twenties, and looked like the couple you describe. Then there was a young couple with a baby on the way. I couldn’t even imagine them trying to fit their life in that place with a baby!!!
Anyway, perhaps this scenario with Adam and Sadie, would be more of a design challenge if they had to move from a one bedroom in Ohio to a studio in San Francisco. :)

August 7, 2012 at 12:18 pmAh, but there is a bit of fantasy involved in these! ;) I had a dream last night that I was in SF, and I stumbled upon the most perfect little house for my family. It was up for auction and though it was a stretch, I bid on it and won, for a price I could afford! Then I woke up.
