On skates! I had my first Derby Lite session on Saturday. I’m pretty bad, but I’m confident that I’ll get better with practice. Now I just need a roller derby name…
(And yes, I had to watch this after writing that title.)

April 11, 2011 at 10:03 amOh, I can hardly walk in regular shoes. I wish I could roller derby! I had thought maybe my name could be Mother Steffer. LOL. I am not very good at coming up with those names, as you can see.

April 11, 2011 at 10:07 amWooohooo! You are going to LOVE it. It’s so awkward at first, but once you have your crossovers and speed all smooth…. incredible. As for derby names, check http://www.twoevils.org/rollergirls. They post all of the registered names. Since no 2 names can be the same, it’s a great place to check before submitting your preferences. The names on there can be pretty inspiring too. Good luck! I can’t wait to hear what name you pick!

April 11, 2011 at 10:09 amWOOO HOOOO!! Welcome to the derby world! I’ve been reading your blog since before Eleanor was born and doing derby for about 8 months now (still a beginner….I started from zero) and just LOVE it! You will too! Please, if you have any questions, feel free to shoot me an email!
Have fun!

April 11, 2011 at 10:24 amGorgeous skates! If I wasn’t so fragile, I’d love to give roller derby a shot. Okay, let’ see. What could your name be? Maybe something like The Wreckorator. Or Interior Wreckorator because you wreck people’s interiors. ;) Or something decor related. How about Elle de Gore? Or maybe pink related. Like Gritty in Pink? I gotta think about this. You need a fabulous name.

April 11, 2011 at 10:38 amOoh, I like Gritty in Pink! I mean, I REALLY like that for you, Nicole!
Good job, Melissa!

April 11, 2011 at 10:50 amGritty in Pink is awesome, but taken! That’s the problem I keep running into… I think of something good, but someone else has already used it. (Here’s the names roster.) Elle De Gore is funny though!

April 11, 2011 at 10:47 ameveryone sucks in the beginning, no worries. stick with it, you’ll be amazed with the results! practice squatting every chance you get when you’re off skates and it will help you TONS when you’re on skates. so worth it!

April 11, 2011 at 11:48 amOH! Where did you get the skates?
Making it Lovely
April 11, 2011 at 12:17 pmI ordered them through Derby Lite. They’re Riedell Vandal skates with Radar Tuner wheels. A lot of new skaters get Riedell R3’s too.

April 11, 2011 at 12:04 pmI have a friend who does roller derby. Her name is Sirius Mischief.
I vote Elle de Gore for you. Clever, cute.
August is adorable. No tears!

April 11, 2011 at 6:31 pmOk, I consider myself a loud and proud nerd. I think being a nerd is a positive thing :) So, the name that makes me giggle, and would incorporate your baby girls name, is Eleanerd Roosevelt. I’m just saying….. hahaha

April 11, 2011 at 8:28 pmSo I always admired my mom for doing things like jazzersize after she had us kids. She worked hard, lost the weight & maintained a healthy life for herself & still managed to have the energy to take care of me and my younger brothers. But rolly derby 2 months after giving birth? You are one bad ass mama! Have fun!!!! ;)

April 11, 2011 at 9:21 pmYou got Wickeds! I an so jealous!

April 15, 2011 at 3:20 pmI wish! They’re Vandals. Same boot though — they’re nice.

April 12, 2011 at 12:08 amI was thinking of your shop name as part of your derby name. How about Pink Loves Black & Blue? Black and blue as in bruises……the bruises you might get and the ones you might be giving. LOL! ;-)

April 12, 2011 at 3:46 amI love them!
I have seen people doing this in my city now (Bristol, UK) it’s so cool, all the girls look tough but cool!

April 12, 2011 at 4:20 amThose are cute skates! I had a list of names I thought up when I lived in Richmond and did a few practices with the River City Roller Girls, but I have no idea where it went. These are what I can remember:
Rita M. Weep (read em and weep, heh)
Grand Muff Tarkin (get it? cause you’re a ladyperson!)
Annabelle Lector (this one seems so obvious that it’s prob taken already)

April 12, 2011 at 4:21 amUpon further review, I suppose that should be Lecter*

April 12, 2011 at 6:35 amI love this! And, after a brief period of reflection, I realize that I’m not even tough enough to come up with bad ass names. Hahaha. I would not survive the roller derby.

April 12, 2011 at 6:46 amThat is so awesome of brave of you! Way to do something outside of the box. For a name how about Bad, Bad Pinky Brown? I can hear the chants now “Bad, bad Pinky Brown… baddest girl in the whole damn town…badder than old King Kong…meaner than a junk yard dog.

April 12, 2011 at 10:22 amyou are impressive in so many ways! thanks for some more inspiration.
am sure you will come up with just the right name. one of my favorites belongs to pamela ribon of la derby dolls – may q. holla (ha!) when you need some laughs and inspiration of your own, read her book “going in circles”. :)

April 29, 2011 at 11:53 amI just wanted to tell you that your post inspired me to find a roller derby team in my town. I went to my first practice last night! and loved every painful minute of it!

May 17, 2011 at 4:01 amRoller Derby is great fun with a fantastic community of women. Be warned though it is utterly addictive as much for the sport as it is for the new friends it brings. We have some amazing super Mums in our league (Adelaide Roller Derby) who are incredible. I really dont know how they juggle children, work, relationships and roller derby!
Which league are you training with? Good luck picking a name. I suggest thinking about what your eventual nickname will be as your name will always get shortened and thats what you’ll always get called. A friend’s derby name is Bootlegger Lily but she always gets called Booty.
