I just ordered the Lubi Daybed from CB2 for our little guest room.
I think the Pier 1 lamp that I bought for the office might find a home in the guest room too.
Do you know why? Because we have a guest coming! Lili will be staying here for a few days next week! We’ll be going to the Design*Sponge Biz Ladies Meet Up, the DIY Trunk Show, and maybe a couple of other events too.
I haven’t even started on the guest room yet though! Here’s what it looks like when it’s empty:
It’s an awkward little room (7′ x 14′, with a sloping ceiling). Any ideas? I haven’t devoted much thought to it yet, but maybe we can whip it into shape quickly! You know, in all of my spare time. ;)

No, don’t worry. It probably won’t be done, but we can at least try! Or think about trying!

November 9, 2007 at 4:04 pmHi there! First time leaving a comment… I suggest that you make the room feel like an “inside out” bed. I would start by hanging suspension rods with pretty fabric along the places that need concealment. Fabric is faster, easier, and more flexible than paint, which I’m sure you know. =) Love your style and your blog! Hope it’s okay that I’m leaving this comment!? =)

November 9, 2007 at 4:12 pmOh please yes! I think if you tossed some dirty rags in there it would really make it feel homey. I cant wait!

November 9, 2007 at 5:24 pmI love that lamp. I need to go to Pier 1 soon and check out what else they have hiding there…
Love your blog, btw. I’ll be at the D*S meetup too! I’m a photographer but I’m hoping to glean some helpful marketing tidbits:)

November 9, 2007 at 9:41 pmI feel a little ridiculous giving any advice because you have the most exquisite taste and I know that you know better than I do! For some reason, I almost think the ceiling should be painted the same color as the room. I’d hang some long pretty curtains, (I love the way you draped the brown ones that I think are a closet curtain in your room), and then I’d put four or five shelves (short in width) over to the left of that little window, paint them the same color as the wall and put some pretty, delicate little things like white towels and soaps for your guest :)

November 10, 2007 at 7:38 amI’d paint the walls and ceiling the same soft, airy color to make the space seem more open. A beautiful print for the curtains, maybe a little table in front of the window with candles to make the room warm and cozy.

November 10, 2007 at 12:19 pmSince it’s small, you might consider going with darker colors on the walls and same on the ceiling (like a chocolate brown or something similar). Something that would actually make it feel like a cozy little den or nest. Accentuate the smallness to make it feel warm and toasty–someplace you’d like to snuggle up and go to sleep.

November 11, 2007 at 6:29 amI have two rooms identical to yours in my house. For both, we installed pocket doors to conserve what space we could. It makes a huge difference to the rooms. BTW -I don’t recommend painting the walls and ceiling the same color. These little sloped-ceiling rooms can get awfully cave-like.

November 11, 2007 at 6:48 ami disagree with the above commenter. we had two rooms like this in our last house, and we did paint the sloped part of the wall the same color as the rest of the walls and it made it so much more cohesive. you didn’t see a huge blank white spot when you walked in the room. that said, you would have to use a lighter color paint to keep it airy.

I am reading everyone’s comments and it just goes to show how we all like totally different things for the space. I have yet had to take on a space like this, and to be honest I DON’T look forward to it. ;) I would paint it a light color if it was me. I suppose it depends on what color YOU love right now. It’ll come to you. Don’t listen to any of us to much. Good luck and just have fun with it.
p.s.
If it were me I would probably paint something funky on the ceiling or hang art. :P

November 12, 2007 at 1:59 pm‘Cmon now! Where’s the 3D rendering of your guest room? How can we help you without it? (ducks as you whap my head)

November 13, 2007 at 10:14 amOh cool, I’m planning on going to the Design Sponge biz ladies meeting too!!
I’d say paint the whole thing white or something light. Add a rug, so it is soft and warm under foot for guests. Include a little dresser for friends to put clothes or storage for extra sheets and blankets. Maybe a nice cozy chair to sit on and read. And some fun patterned curtains!!!

January 9, 2008 at 3:56 pmI think a bed under the eaves is very cozy. I’m not sure how to post a pic here, but if you go about 1/2 way down this post http://blog.designpublic.com/2007/10/10/alisons-heroic-branford-coastal-renovation/
you can see that her bed is tucked under the eaves. Of course, if two people are in there, there might be a concussion involvoed. It looks like it will be a really cozy room.
Also, a lucite bedside table might come in handy, like the ones in the CB2 catalog. I saw in some recent mag (perhaps dec or jan cottage living?) that the woman who owns Pieces in Atlanta (Lee something) used a lucite table for a bedside table to make the space appear more open. It worked really well in a room that mixed all kinds of materials including driftwood, glossy paint, Hable construction fabric and lucite.

P.S. I’m having so much fun catching up on your blog today, I know this post is rather old and you are probably done with the room by now :)

January 11, 2008 at 1:13 amOoh, a lucite table is a good idea! The little side table that’s in there now is cute, but the unintended effect is that the room is starting to look a little themey.
