Really? No such thing as work/life balance for successful startup entrepreneurs?
p.s. The referenced article by Elon Musk’s ex-wife can be found here. -
Hey, you, with the closet full of cute clothes that you never wear. Stop that.

And on that note… “I decided getting back to a more comfortable size should be something I celebrate with a new sweater, not something I acknowledge with something I wore 10 years ago and kept because it was expensive.”

For those of you who don’t comment on blogs…

I can’t resist a good cake stand. Or twenty.

Slatted wood top with an industrial steel base? Glass top, cast-metal branch legs? How would you put together your mix + match dining table?

Zara Home finally became available in the US. Here are my favorites from the brand.

I was already wishing I had one of these bookshelves, and now look.

Ah, gold. So pretty for office accessories. (I hated gold as a teenager though, I remember quite clearly!)

October 19, 2012 at 3:19 amWhat a beautiful perspective Emily Freeman has in that blog post about people who don’t comment on blogs! It was so refreshing to hear her thoughts and the freedom that she gives to so many of us who read and don’t comment. Thank you for passing that along!

October 22, 2012 at 11:31 pmIt’s true. I meet a lot of people, and often one of the first things they do is apologize for not commenting. Emily wrote what I wish I had written.

October 19, 2012 at 8:10 amHi Nicole! I always like your posts, but this was a particularly strong Honor Roll today! I especially enjoyed the clothing posts! So applicable now that I started my own baking business. I’ve definitely fallen into the yoga pant trap! Just thought I’d say thanks.

October 19, 2012 at 12:19 pmThat David Shaywitz is full of it. Most start-ups fail. If one happens to become successful and it is done by having employees dedicating a disproportional amount of their time to work, then you can’t revert from that to a work/life balance. At least not without a lot of conscious and persistent effort from management. Also it’s just plain unhealthy mentally. So many web engineers watch their 20s fly (and sometimes 30s and 40s) by working 9am-7, 8, 9, 10pm, on call at night and on the weekends, sometimes working straight through the weekends, with nary a vacation. And what for? Gambling on the chance they’ll strike it rich and cash out millionaires. The reality is a very high majority won’t ever cash out with even tens of thousands. And in the end is your life worth the maybe chance of a few thousand dollars (or in the extremely rare case, millions)?
Signed, wife of web engineer whose husband is working at his fourth start-up in three years. I know the kind of life David is praising, and it sucks. Thankfully my husband is at a start-up that actually cares about its employees now and they’re actually successful (so far that is).
[uh yeah, guess that one riled me up ;) ]

October 22, 2012 at 11:33 pmIt riled me up too. I don’t have experience working at a start-up, but I have built a business or two while maintaining a balance, and I know I’m not the only one.

October 19, 2012 at 7:28 pmI really love gold now too. And in the 90’s (I too was in High School) and didn’t want anything to do with it. I read an article about Julia Roberts sometime in those years, the reporter described her wearing silver rings on every finger. I loved that, and being a redhead, I wanted to be Julia. So, silver was the only metallic for me.

October 20, 2012 at 2:14 pmI love that post about commenting – thanks for sharing. I’m going to share with my readers as well. It’s something I think about (that I’m sure every blogger thinks about) but her post puts things in perspective.

October 21, 2012 at 10:20 amThanks so much for sharing the images of the google data center, they are fabulous. The piece about the comments was also a way of thinking about commenting that I hadn’t considered before.

October 22, 2012 at 8:57 amI’m with you Nicole. I hated gold when I was a teen and refused to wear any gold jewelry, always opting for silver. Now I’ve noticed a lot more gold creeping into my collection…

October 22, 2012 at 9:23 amLove this honor roll. I am especially inspired by the post on not saving your clothes – which is a trap I’ve definitely fallen into since I work from home. I still don’t plan on wearing a suit to my desk in the living room – but I also plan on shopping for clothes that aren’t just casual or work, but somewhere in between!

October 30, 2012 at 7:59 pmI loved reading the article about wearing and loving your wardrobe instead of saving outfits. I’m definitely guilty of this. No more saving outfits for another day.
