You know how I said that I wanted a little garden around the patio? But that I was too exhausted to do it, and that it could wait? Yeah. I changed my mind.
My neighbor offered some of her phlox, so I happily took some. I thought she was going to give me just a couple of stems (which would have been very sweet), but she offered a whole big bunch of it! It’s looking a bit wilted right now, but hopefully it will spring back up. I picked up some more coneflowers and coreopsis too. I have no idea if it’s too late to be planting all of these things, so hopefully the garden will be all right.

July 16, 2008 at 11:44 amFrom what I’ve heard, it’s not too late to be planting…and if it’s not too late up here in the cold north, it’s not too late where you are! (:
I saw your deck photos on Flickr, it looks amazing!

July 16, 2008 at 12:46 pmI’m really digging your new patio, congrats. Do you have any plans for that not so pretty chain link fence in the background?

July 16, 2008 at 1:12 pmPhlox is awesome – once it gets going it growns into a beautiful ground cover and comes back every year!

July 16, 2008 at 1:27 pmThe patio progress has just been awesome.
Have you thought of a building a grape arbor at the north end of the patio? (or what I think is the north end – the side pointing toward the external mechanicals (A/C?) for the house – judging by the shadows?)
It wouldn’t fill with grapevines this year, they would just get started, but the arbor itself would be a cool, sculptural thing, and would shield the patio view of those mechanical thingys. (I think they are A/C, but I live in Seattle. We don’t do air conditioning as it would be a waste for all but three days a year.)

July 16, 2008 at 5:16 pmWow, I can’t believe what a difference that new garden makes! It looks gorgeous. Have you mulched it in a darker mulch or is that just the dirt, because it goes so well with the chairs!

July 16, 2008 at 6:15 pmthat makes such a difference!
hopefully you get a little rain soon (it’s amazing how much difference rain makes to a garden – you can water it daily, but it’s just not the same). Once your plants relax into the space they’ll look even better!

July 16, 2008 at 7:15 pmyou have done a fantastic job with your garden (and house). it’s really inspiring. I don’t have the energy or the money at the moment, but when I do, I’d like it to look like this!
thank you for sharing your house/garden journey, it really is lovely!

July 17, 2008 at 8:03 amIf you did ever want to do something neat to you chain link fence (which isn’t too bad compared to mine) I’d recommend Boston Ivy. It can be pretty invasive once it gets going but it is easy to manage and can cover the whole fence top to bottom in about two years – making the fence a beautiful green barrier. We did it to our and love it. No problems so far!

July 21, 2008 at 10:51 pmlovely!!! oh, how summer makes me crave outdoor spaces and gardens, but all i have is a dirty gross little smoking balcony that you can barely squeeze two people on. oh, the cost of being poor in LA.
