    The Bedroom’s Mini-Makeover

Coral & Gray, with Black & White Details

Coral and Gray Bedroom with Black and White, Making it Lovely

The bedroom is looking a bit different these days. The shell of the room is the same. Same charcoal gray walls, same layout, same bed. All the furniture is the same, actually. The only changes have been the bed linens and the botanical print from the living room.

I’m not sure how much longer we’ll be able to keep the lighting fixture in the room. Both kids want to swing from it.

    Details, texture…

The book situation, as usual, is a little out of hand. The bookshelf is starting to see books stacked two deep, and Brandon and I each have stacks on top of, underneath, and to the sides of our bedside tables. The library bookshelves are already full though.

The black and white pillows and throw were from IKEA, and the coral bedding was from west elm. Little changes (only a mini-makeover, remember), but I love the look.

  • How to Make a DIY Terrarium

How to Make a DIY Terrarium

I had been meaning to make a terrarium for a while now, but I finally got to it last week. I put together a post about the process for west elm, using their tall glass jar.

The full instructions and list of materials needed can be found at west elm’s blog, Front & Main. I also talked about how to care for your terrarium, and what I would have done differently.

You could simplify the process by choosing a smaller container and just placing moss inside (like this one) with a few interesting rocks or objects. Of course, you could make it more complex too, by choosing an extra wide vessel and combining more plants of different sizes and textures.

I’d love to try a succulent terrarium next time, switching out the rich potting soil for a sandier blend, and using an open-air container. I think it would be fun to gather some HO scale model items to make a little scene, too. I do have a special fondness for miniatures, after all.

  • The New Side Table

    The New Side Table

Yes, yes, yes. The new table looks awesome.

I got mine for a song (15% off, plus some store credit), but a couple of people pointed out this excellent alternative yesterday. The carved pattern is a little different (though still nice), and it’s a little more affordable.

Now I really want to finish painting the trim in the living room. And if I were feeling fancy I’d stage the table with pretty decorative objects and fresh flowers, but the reality is that it will be soon have coloring books and action figures on top, no doubt.

  • Carved Wood Side Table

    Carved Wood Side Table

I was a big fan of this coffee table when it came out and I wrote about it here, but I decided it was too low (and potentially tippy) for our living room. The new side table version, however?

It may just be perfect next to the crazy floral chair. I still love the little table that we have there, but it’s too spindly (and tippy!), and I’ve been looking for something with more presence. I think I have some store credit too which, as we all know, is essentially free money. (Never mind that I did actually spend that money once upon a time.)

    What do you think?

Making it Yours 7: Window Daybed

It’s been far too long since the last Making it Yours (MiY) series! I’m back at it, this time with the Window Daybed.

MiY is all about the way a piece of furniture can see you through several rooms and several phases of your life. It’s not just about the furniture, it’s about the way furniture can fit into our lives and become something more, something versatile, even something sentimental.

Check in later today to see the daybed get its start in a bedroom for a young boy.

  • Lourdes Sánchez Bull’s-Eye Rug

    Lourdes Sánchez Bull’s-Eye Rug

This is the rug that I was considering for my office. I like it, and the size (8’x8′) is a better fit for the room than the 5’x8′ one I have now. I’ve replaced my office chair though, so I’ll probably keep the rug I have now. Of course, now it’s on sale for 20% off, so this would be the time to buy if I’m going to. It has a certain KAPOW! that I like.
