Twitter Chat with John Gidding, and a HUGE Giveaway!

You remember the lovely bedroom redesign that I did with the help of Membership Reward Points from American Express, yes? Well now I am working with them again to host a Twitter Chat with HGTV designer John Gidding. John will be giving tons of advice next Thursday on how to decorate and find creative ways to stretch your budget — just like I did using my points.

John and I will be on Twitter for one hour on Thursday, July 29 at 8:30p.m. EST/ 5:30 p.m. PST (search #AmexHome). John will be answering your home design questions about anything from creating amazing guest spaces to choosing the right colors for your home. He’ll also have plenty of inexpensive ways to get your home ready for sale and ideas for upgrading rooms on a tight budget.

Now, you may have noticed the whole HUGE giveaway thing we’ve got going on here…

How do you enter to win?

Comment on this post with your questions for John and we’ll discuss some of them during our Twitter Chat. By leaving a comment, you’ll be entered to win items like a KitchenAid mixer, a Bissell vacuum, or a set of Cuisinart cookware (all of which can be bought with Membership Rewards points). There will be ten winners in this giveaway! Here are the prizes:

  1. Cuisinart® 10-Piece Commercial Cookware Set
  2. Cuisinart GR-4N Griddler
  3. Krups FBC2 6-slice Convection Toaster Oven
  4. All-Clad 6.5 Quart Stainless Slow Cooker with Ceramic Insert
  5. KitchenAid Stand Mixer with Attachment Pack ( Empire Red)
  6. Wusthof Classic 8-Piece Block Set
  7. Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Upright Vacuum Cleaner

This giveaway is open to US residents only, one entry per person. Ten winners will be randomly chosen on July 30 to win one prize each. International readers are welcome to participate in the Twitter Chat and submit questions, but are not eligible to win. Remember you can ask anything about design and home improvements — this is a fun chance to get advice from an HGTV designer!

I know many of you are following me on Twitter @makingitlovely, but you can also follow John @JohnGidding. If you want to get some ideas for home improvement immediately, go to membershiprewards.com/home. And be sure to follow along to #AmexHome with John and I on Twitter next Thursday.

John- I will be married soon and will move into my fiance’s condo. He has a strange den set up. We thought we could mount the tv over the fireplace but we cannot. Should we move the furniture around where it faces the fireplace or the tv. There is not enough room to do two separate sitting areas. I know this might not be enough information, but maybe you could generally discuss how to stage a living area that has a fire place, needs a tv, no way to mount the tv over the fireplace and no room for two seating areas. I have an exterior question–we have a small brick house that is all roof but there is one prominent gable seen from the road. What are your favorite ideas for renters to make a small space look and feel pulled together? I can’t paint, put up shelving, or make major updates. Thanks!

We just moved into a home with refinished wood floors (gorgeous!!). But it seems that having wood furniture with the floors seems to be a wood overkill. Is there anything I can do to play down all the wood?

My husband and I are in the process of buying our first home. We are both fresh out of college and only have broken hand-me-down and Goodwill furniture. We’ll slowly be buying new furniture and decor items for our new home. My question is, when buying new furniture and decor on a budget, where do you recommend you spend more and where should you try to save?

What type of counter top is your preferred choice for kitchens? We’re about to replace our counters and feel like there are an overwhelming amount of options.

Hi Nicole & John! Fantastic give away! We’re getting ready to re-do the master bath. We’re leaning towards tumbled marble for the shower surround. Any new products/finishes out there that we should know about? Thanks so much!

Hi, John! I’m a huge fan. :) My husband and I are in the process of getting rid of all our white walls. Our downstairs is pretty open and for most of it–i.e., combined living area/dining area/hallway–we’ve chosen Valspar’s Caramel Honey (gold), Toasted Pumpkin in the bathroom (did I mention we like color?), but for the kitchen we’re stumped. We want something that works with the other colors, but I’m not sure what would go with light-colored maple floors, St. Cecilia granite, and cherry cabinets. Any suggestions?

–Sorry this is so long, Nicole. Feel free to cut it if you plan to use it. :) And thanks for this opportunity!!

I am remodeling my kitchen and I’m not sure about color choices for the tile floor and the countertop. I have a traditional hickory cabinets that are a medium tone. Tile floor will either be a “Slate” grey or a “Mesa Rust” a la Lowes. What color granite would you suggest for either color?
