You remember the lovely bedroom redesign that I did with the help of Membership Reward Points from American Express, yes? Well now I am working with them again to host a Twitter Chat with HGTV designer John Gidding. John will be giving tons of advice next Thursday on how to decorate and find creative ways to stretch your budget — just like I did using my points.
John and I will be on Twitter for one hour on Thursday, July 29 at 8:30p.m. EST/ 5:30 p.m. PST (search #AmexHome). John will be answering your home design questions about anything from creating amazing guest spaces to choosing the right colors for your home. He’ll also have plenty of inexpensive ways to get your home ready for sale and ideas for upgrading rooms on a tight budget.
Now, you may have noticed the whole HUGE giveaway thing we’ve got going on here…
How do you enter to win?
Comment on this post with your questions for John and we’ll discuss some of them during our Twitter Chat. By leaving a comment, you’ll be entered to win items like a KitchenAid mixer, a Bissell vacuum, or a set of Cuisinart cookware (all of which can be bought with Membership Rewards points). There will be ten winners in this giveaway! Here are the prizes:
- Cuisinart® 10-Piece Commercial Cookware Set

July 22, 2010 at 8:23 pmWhen creating a color palate for you home, is it best to stick with one bold color, like mocha or a bright turquoise, and then use more subdued colors in the rest of your house. I feel like I get excited about big bright colors, and now my house feels a bit disjointed.

July 22, 2010 at 8:29 pmJohn,

July 22, 2010 at 8:36 pmI need to redo my very dated bathroom (the only one in our small 3/1). We’re planning on selling next year and we’re on a tight budget. What changes offer the best bang for the buck and are buyer-friendly?

July 22, 2010 at 8:40 pmI have a two-part question…
We are updating the wide vanity of our very 90’s bathroom and wonder if we should stick with one sink centered or switch to his-and-her sinks. Which is more popular with buyers?
We moved the laundry to the basement and, unfortunately, it sits directly at the bottom of the stairs for all to see. For future buyers, would it be best to wall it in (would feel very small when inside) or leave it open and install cabinetry and countertops?
Looking forward to reading all your great advice next week! :)

July 22, 2010 at 8:45 pmHubs and I are DIY renovating our 1910 bungalow, last redone with tons of paneling in the 70s. Under the paneling is, of course, plaster. Help! Rock and hard place. Paint it? Tear it all out and sheet rock? Is that beyond DIY ability?
Also, what tips do you have for painting cabinetry?
Thank you so much for the chance to win and the chance to learn!

July 22, 2010 at 9:21 pmMy husband and I and our 1 1/2 year old daughter recently moved in with my parents as we are in a time of transition right now. We have the upstairs to ourselves; there is our bedroom, our daughters bedroom, and a bathroom. We will be with them for about a year, so I want to do something to make the space feel like ours but don’t have a lot of money to spend (if I did, we wouldn’t be living with my parents:)). I actually like the colors on the walls (light purple in my daughters room, soft blue in ours), so I’m not planning on painting, but what other inexpensive things could I do to make it feel like our home within their home?

July 22, 2010 at 9:35 pmHi John and Nicole!
I’m looking to replace my 14 year old sofa set (sage green brushed twill…hello 1994!) and I recently found a chocolate brown leather sofa that I totally fell in love with. I’m thinking of saying yes to the set (there is a nice club chair that matches) but am not sure what else to pair it with. I want to end up with a room that looks more light, airy and modern and less like a stuffy old library.
Thanks!

July 22, 2010 at 11:11 pmMy husband, 7 mo old daughter and I live in a really great 1930’s craftsman.
While the front half of the house, which has many large rooms open to one another, still has the original hardwoods, the back bedrooms and hallway have old dingy carpeting covering it up (not sure what shape its in, but from the corner i have seen it looks pretty good).
I would love to tear up the carpet and restore the original hardwoods, but my husband doesn’t necessarily agree. He thinks families will like having carpet in the bedrooms and that it’s nice for kids. I feel like its a crime to cover up all that wood….. but most of all we want it to look good, function for our family, and be good for resale.
So which wins? We have also talked about just carpeting the bedrooms and doing wood in the hallway. I am just afraid that with a tiled kitchen as well, too many transitions in the flooring will make our house look smaller and somewhat chaotic.
does any of that even make sense?? help!

July 23, 2010 at 12:07 amHi there, I recently moved into a townhouse which is a big fixer-upper. BIG. As in, every room needs a lot of work.
I’m stalled because there is so much to do. I want to live in a stylish, comfy, welcoming space — but have been stunned into doing nothing.
How do I start and what would you start with? One room and complete it top to bottom? or all the painting in the entire place?
Thank you!

July 23, 2010 at 6:23 amMy mother is getting ready to put her 1970s split-ranch style house on the market in the fall. July 23, 2010 at 6:52 amI have ALOT of all dark wood furniture….basically nothing in lighter wood or other colors. Our house is small so when you come in the door you see the living room and kitchen all with such dark woods, as well as darker bamboo blinds. I feel like its all just SO dark and mundane but cant afford to get new furniture so i was wondering what ideas you might have for me. I know painting is an option, but all of these items are from ikea and not “real” wood so i cant necessarily sand them first. I have side tables,a tv stand,a coffee table, book shelves and a kitchen set with chairs that are all dark. Any ideas on which of these would look right in a different color to offset all this dark? Thanks!!!!
