You remember the lovely bedroom redesign that I did with the help of Membership Reward Points from American Express, yes? Well now I am working with them again to host a Twitter Chat with HGTV designer John Gidding. John will be giving tons of advice next Thursday on how to decorate and find creative ways to stretch your budget — just like I did using my points.
John and I will be on Twitter for one hour on Thursday, July 29 at 8:30p.m. EST/ 5:30 p.m. PST (search #AmexHome). John will be answering your home design questions about anything from creating amazing guest spaces to choosing the right colors for your home. He’ll also have plenty of inexpensive ways to get your home ready for sale and ideas for upgrading rooms on a tight budget.
Now, you may have noticed the whole HUGE giveaway thing we’ve got going on here…
How do you enter to win?
Comment on this post with your questions for John and we’ll discuss some of them during our Twitter Chat. By leaving a comment, you’ll be entered to win items like a KitchenAid mixer, a Bissell vacuum, or a set of Cuisinart cookware (all of which can be bought with Membership Rewards points). There will be ten winners in this giveaway! Here are the prizes:
- Cuisinart® 10-Piece Commercial Cookware Set

July 22, 2010 at 8:50 amWhat are some inexpensive ways to brighten up a deck and make it more into an outdoor dining room…great for entertaining or just family dinners?
Natalie
July 22, 2010 at 8:50 amI live in a loft space that I love. Unfortunately, I don’t love my floors and cabinets. The flooring is the original wood floor from the building over 100 years ago. It definitely gives the place character, but it is just not my style. And I have berber carpeting as well. Also, the cabinets are nothing exciting…
I love blacks, grays, reds and stainless steel, straight lines… industrial style.
I want to love everything about my place, but I don’t have the funds to totally transform it. Can you offer suggestions for a floor covering? How about a good way to change the look of my cabinets? Is painting the only answer? Also… can a place have too much black, gray and red???

July 22, 2010 at 8:51 amI live in a 90-year-old cottage-like house with plaster walls. It seems hanging pictures or just about anything requiring a nail turns into a cracked, crumbly mess (accompanied by some choice words from husband). Any tricks of the trade for hanging artwork, shelves or basically anything on plaster walls?
Thank you!!
(Love the giveaway … and can’t wait for the chat!)

July 22, 2010 at 8:52 amJohn: I love (love!) Curb Appeal: The Block. My question is more about your work – your interiors tend to be very modern and sleek, but the houses you work with on CA are older. You do a great job of updating those houses while honoring their history and the intention of their architects and builders. Is that a challenge given your modern design leanings?
Thanks for at least letting us fantasize about winning some of that great loot!
Emily
July 22, 2010 at 8:52 amI just bought a great mid-century modern brick house, but the interior is quite boring. I’d like to add some color to the kitchen first, and have an idea to do two paint colors with a chair rail separating the two about half way up the wall. (So the bottom part would be asparagus and the top would be mint green). My husband says that the wainscoting style is very un-mid century modern. Do you think it would still work?

July 22, 2010 at 8:52 amThanks for hosting the tweet up and the giveaway. I’m a boomarang kid – I moved back home after college to save money for my own place. I’m getting ready to move out and create my own space for the first time, and I want to know where to start when I’m creating a room? Should I pick a statement piece, say a sofa or a bed, and work around that? Or choose paint first? How can I get organized so that I’m staying true to my vision for my space?

July 22, 2010 at 8:54 amJohn, can you please suggest where I can get some large scale artwork for under $100? I love the art pieces in Nicole’s house, and would love to get something similar. But I don’t have much to spend as of now. Thanks for the giveaway and whatever advice you may have for me.

July 22, 2010 at 8:55 amHow many colors can you get away with using in one room, if they all coordinate?
How many wood tones can you have in one room? For example, in my family room I have a dark mahogany wood piano, a cream computer desk and black bookcases and TV hutch.

July 22, 2010 at 8:55 amJohn,
I will be gutting out my bathroom in September and having new tile installed. What are the benefits of using epoxy grout for a bathroom? Is it better than sand grout for the wet environment?

July 22, 2010 at 8:55 amI had no idea so many things were available using Amex points! If I use mine at all, it’s usually for travel. My question is this: I’m a young (25), single, occasional cook, currently an Americorps VISTA in rural West Virginia. I’m only here for a year, after which I don’t know where I’ll be headed. Right now my kitchen is primarily hand-me-downs and items found at the local dollar store. I get frustrated with the low quality of things, but can’t decide if I really want to invest in nicer (and more expensive) things when it will all be packed up and moved to who-knows-where in 10 months. As it stands now, I could leave behind most of my kitchen stuff, with the exception of a collection of vintage Pyrex. In your opinion, is investing in nicer pots, pans, mixers, utensils, etc, worth it at this stage in my life?

July 22, 2010 at 8:56 amWhat an amazing giveaway. My question is about hardware for kitchens. I’m currently painting my cabinets gray on the lowers and creamy white on the uppers. I’m thinking of going with a burnished gold colour handle. I’m wondering, though, if the trend toward gold coloured accents is just a fad and if I should stick with the traditional brushed nickel.

July 22, 2010 at 8:56 amwe have a big pipe in our bathroom that goes from floor to ceiling. it is against a wall but it is about 5 inch in diameter and made from cast iron. We can’t move it. I have painted it with wall color but it seems like I should be able to do something interesting with it. it’s right in the middle of the room which is long and narrow.

July 22, 2010 at 8:57 amI would love to see some conversation on patterns/motifs that become dated very quickly and those that stay classic (for better or worse… sometimes obviously dated things *ahem ahem ANTLER TREND* can be fun, but sometimes it’s better to invest in something classic.)

July 22, 2010 at 8:57 amMy friend has told me to pick the rug for a room first, would you agree? How do you go about selecting area rugs for a space?

Lastly, what are some good sources for larger, affordable area rugs?

July 22, 2010 at 8:58 amI live in the dark Pacific Northwest. The previous owners painted all the walls a dark putty, which is just gloomy in the winter time. I am looking for a color scheme that is neutral but warm, and can be carried through the whole house. Do you have any suggestions? I also need trim color. Thanks.

July 22, 2010 at 8:59 amThis is a great giveaway! Wow so many prices. Question… our house was built in the 40s and underwent 2 additions since. It doesn’t really have any defined style on the exterior. The house has wide painted siding with concrete and brick and brick steps. I want to cover the concrete b/c I think it’s ugly. I thought a thin stacked stone would look good over the concrete but I’m concerned about using stone and brick together with painting siding. Too much? Should I paint the brick? Can I paint the bricks on steps?

July 22, 2010 at 8:59 amI live in a pretty small house and am having trouble with our office area. We have a lot of papers and documents that need filing, but I don’t want a big clunky desk with file cabinet drawers and we don’t have space for an additional file cabinet or even a small rolling drawer. Any suggestions for ways to “hide” filed papers in plain sight?

July 22, 2010 at 9:03 amWhat a terrific giveaway! I’m wondering how to redecorate a basement that has recently had flooding for the first time in 20 years. We had to tear out the carpet and don’t want to ever go through that again. We are considering cement painted floors and throw rugs. Looking for ideas to make the basement a cozy & warm living space that we can use (living + office space).

July 22, 2010 at 9:06 amHow can I incorporate a dark red accent wall going up along our staircase into our home’s decor (mostly neutrals, blues, and greens)? July 22, 2010 at 9:11 amI am a law student and moving into my first single person apartment ever! I love a mix of modern and vintage/antique when it comes to fabrics, furniture, and decor. My question would be what is the best way to blend these two styles? Is it best to stick with one or the other when it comes to purchasing big items like sofas and other pieces of furniture, or is it better to mix them (i.e. a modern coffee table with vintage patterned chairs)?
Secondly, my apartment only has two sets of windows on the back side of the apartment in my bedroom and bathroom, and it gets NO LIGHT. What are some paint colors and techniques to help transform what could potentially be a DUNGEON into a lighter, airy space?

July 22, 2010 at 9:14 amHere’s a conundrum- We just moved into a house with… wait for it… wood paneling. Or just go with it and see what comes out the other side?

July 22, 2010 at 9:19 amI have a couch I got at Goodwill for $50. It’s old – in the good way: very well built, sturdy, heavy. July 22, 2010 at 9:25 amWhat a great giveaway! John Gidding is one of my favorite HGTV designers and he is so cute. He reminds me of one of my best friends (when said friend was 20 years younger). My question is about boosting real estate value in this down market. I’m not interested in selling my house, but it is so discouraging that it has lost almost a third of its value just because of foreclosures in the area. And all this after all of the work and money we have put into the house in the five years we’ve owned it. Anything specifically we can do to help turn the tide?
