August Ray Balch was born on Tuesday, February 8 at 4:38 in the late afternoon. He weighed in at 10 pounds, 1 ounce, and measured 22 inches long.
You may notice that my last update in the 4-6 Weeks Project is missing an entry for February 8. I’m writing this from the hospital, so I haven’t been home yet to edit and write the photo from that day.
My water broke at 2 o’clock in the afternoon while I was napping with Eleanor. I called Brandon to have him take me to the hospital and his parents came to stay with Eleanor. August was born less than three hours later in an unmedicated, natural delivery (all ten pounds of him). I was fully in favor of receiving an epidural, but I progressed so quickly that by the time the anesthesiologist had finally arrived, I was ready to deliver. Thankfully it was speedy!
August and I are doing well. Eleanor has already met him and she was very sweet to her little brother. I’m looking forward to going home tonight to my family of four.

February 10, 2011 at 12:08 pmSo happy for you and your family of 4. Glad to hear everyone is healthy and well. What a big baby boy and one strong mama!
I had a similar {precipitous} labor with my second born…48 minutes start to finish and so intense. I delivered at the nearest hospital {not the one we preferred and had already prepaid at} less than 10 minutes after arriving. The nurses had no idea how fast I was progressing and were trying to get a urine sample, start an IV, etc. I just kept telling them the baby was coming and was trying not to push. Finally, a doctor heard my late stage labor cries from down the hall and ran into the room just in time to catch our baby boy. She was from a different office than the OB had I been seeing throughout my pregnancy {my regular md wasn’t contracted to deliver at the hospital I ended up going to}. After the baby was handed over to the nurses for observation, the delivering physician stood up and said, “Hi, I’m Dr. Burchin. Nice to meet you.” It was so surreal. Thanks for stirring up the memories. I think childbirth is a wonderful thing to look back on. We women are much stronger than we think sometimes!
