Thank you, Kohler, for sponsoring today’s post.
The design world is embracing color again! Kohler is predicting that three colors in particular are trending: vivid greens (definitely big for this year), deep pinks, and velvety blues. I’ve incorporated all three in my living room.
Even without that deep blue rug (which was on loan for a shoot), the same colors are in place.
The sofa color was driven in part by the adjacent kitchen with its blue wallpaper and antique blue stove. Those elements won’t stay forever as I would love to renovate the kitchen at some point, but I still wanted to reference the design in other areas, making the entire home feel more cohesive.
And it all goes back to my earliest thoughts on a color palette for this house three years ago, pulling in the blue along with choices inspired by a vintage botanical print.
The colors have made their way throughout the rest of the home too. Green, pink, and blue in different ratios, most recently in the bedroom and den.
Besides an obvious love of color, I’ve long had a thing for colorful appliances. The laundry room in our last home is one of the spaces I miss most! Our neighborhood is full of old homes, often with the washer and dryer in an unfinished basement. The red washer and dryer were the nicest things in that home’s basement for a long time until we remodeled and finished the space.
The Kohler utility sink that we installed was perfection! Easily my favorite part of the room.
And of course I can’t mention colorful appliances without again bringing up our antique hybrid gas/wood-burning stove from 1918 in baby blue enameled cast iron.
I dream of replacing it with a new enamel-coated range in a beautiful color. If we chose a stainless-steel model though, or even black, white, or ivory, I would likely pull in color in other ways. It makes such a difference. Green, pink, or blue? There’s a good chance, based on the rest of the house!
Whites and neutrals have been dominant for so long. It’s exciting to think that as people redecorate their homes or remodel their kitchens and bathrooms, they’re looking to incorporate color in a big way. You know I’m on board, and definitely in agreement with Kohler’s predictions. What about you? Will you be adding any greens, pinks, or blues to your home?

December 19, 2016 at 11:59 amI love how cohesive everything is when you stick to that color palette (in different ratios). What a great idea to pull from an inspiration print.

December 19, 2016 at 8:07 pmBeautiful!! We just bought a house with dark stained trim, but other areas of the house (kitchen, office, one bath, and mudroom) have white trim. Can you talk about how you make both work in your home? It looks like you have a mix also. I’d like to keep the trim but am having trouble making the rooms look cohesive :-) You’re one of approx. 3 people who haven’t painted the trim all white!

December 20, 2016 at 2:01 pmAs always, love your blog. Would you mind sharing where your clothes drying rack is from in your laundry room? I have been looking for something similar to what you have pictured. Thank you kindly.

December 20, 2016 at 11:27 pmWe bought our home in 2012 and have slowly been making it ours. We’ve painted a room a vivid green, a deep blue and a lighter robin’s egg blue (also a griege, but it is open to the vivid green room so…). And I’m always plotting pops of pink :-D So this news makes me laugh and feel a wee bit smug. But really I’ve been choosing colors because I love them (the green room went green because I liked the way a green enameled pot I already had played with the adjoining tile).
