The New Yorker received an outpouring of hate-mail when it originally published “The Lottery” in 1948.
Shirley Jackson’s reaction: “If the letters “could be considered to give any accurate cross section of the reading public … I would stop writing now,” she concluded.” -
Joss Whedon knows a thing or two about getting it done.

Turns out Andrew WK does too. He says yes to everything.

The captions on these crazy dog-grooming pics are the best!

The childhood art of E.E. Cummings is as delightful as you might expect.

Looks like we got Molly just in time. American Girl is about to retire her, and with her, the last of their original historical roots.

Can you tell which of these trendy watercolor-inspired pillows are high/low?

June 28, 2013 at 6:04 amUgh, I saw the fate of AG the other day. I was never into dolls myself (nor could we have afforded them when I was a kid, in all liklihood) but as a name nerd, I’m as appalled by the dumbing down of the dolls as I am of the idea that my three-year-old might end up with a doll named Saige and not Felicity. :/

June 28, 2013 at 6:35 amAG is retiring Molly? That’s too bad. She was my favorite character as I was growing up. I’ve always pictured that my little girl would inherit my doll one day. Now I’m going to have to devote some serious time searching for her in my parents’ attic (fingers crossed it’s there somewhere) OR some serious money to buy her for our (almost) 4 year-old daughter. She wears pin-striped jammies! And has a victory garden! Something about her braids and glasses and tap-dancing is still irresistible to me after all these years.

July 1, 2013 at 4:37 pmI never had the doll (as I’d written the other day), but I did read the books and Molly was always my favorite. I felt a little silly buying her, but now I’m glad I did!

June 28, 2013 at 7:30 amThanks for posting about the AG retirements. It really makes me sad. When I was young, my parents bought me Addie (I’m a white female from a middle class family), because they wanted me to learn the importance of learning all sorts of history and not only my own. And I agree with Becky…the name Saige is troublesome!

June 28, 2013 at 7:41 amWhere did you see they were retiring Molly? I tried to Google it and couldn’t find anything definitive. Molly was always my favorite, and – since my daughter’s name is (coincidentally) Molly, I always planned to buy her Molly eventually. If she’s retiring, I’m going to go ahead and snatch her up!

July 1, 2013 at 4:38 pmIt’s on the American Girl site, so it is official.

June 28, 2013 at 8:15 amThat zodiac thing sounded absurd, but wow – that is so me.

June 28, 2013 at 9:55 amWow. That zodiac thing is crazy! Mine begins:
TAURUS:
The couch is the center of the Taurean universe, and ideally it is ultra-comfortable and yet provides proper support.
Annnnd I have three sofas in my 1500-square-foot house. One is an antique inherited from my grandmother, but still… That’s just weird. And the sheet thing. But who doesn’t love sensational sheets?

June 28, 2013 at 10:33 amThat’s a bummer about Molly. I still have my Molly doll from when I was younger. I’m hoping to give it to my kid someday. Going to the website just now, I realized they’ve changed the bed and table and chair set since I was a kid, probably lots of the outfits too.

June 28, 2013 at 11:36 amtotall bummer about AG. When I was little I didn’t ever care for the dolls but I collected all the story books and loved reading them. I didn’t realize that things had gotten so watered down and marketing driven…too bad…

June 28, 2013 at 11:40 amI have to say I thought it was interesting that the New York Post received hate mail for “The Lottery” and yet everyone is clamoring to see the “Hunger Games”. People are more insensitive than ever. Always looking for the next shocker. I wonder what would happen if they published it again…

June 29, 2013 at 7:20 pmSpeaking of The New Yorker, have you read “Up in the Old Hotel” by Joseph Mitchell? I just finished it and it was incredible. In some places, it’s such a snapshot in time, but in others, it could have been written yesterday. I think you might just love it if you haven’t read it.

July 1, 2013 at 4:40 pmNo, I haven’t read it yet. I will though — thanks!

June 30, 2013 at 9:44 amI didn’t know all that about AG. What a shame. My Felicity meant a lot to me when I was a kid. I also grew up reading the magazine and my favorite part were the paper dolls of real girls with historical clothing and stories from their mother and grandmother.
