I didn’t go to Target looking for new clothes, but how is one supposed to pass up a cute dress for less than $30 that perfectly coordinates with one’s living room? One doesn’t. I didn’t.
- Floral Print Dress, Target (A New Day)
- Super Opaque Tights, HUE
- Linked Shapes Statement Earrings, Madewell
- Aziza Block Heel Pump, Franco Sarto
(I want to try these — same style with a lower, even more walkable heel.)
Just a couple of days later, I was on Instagram Stories talking about making room for our new Noble dresser from Young House Love (a gift from John and Sherry, celebrating the launch of their furniture line) and realized I had dressed to match my house again. Accidentally, but perfectly. This called for photo documentation.
- Linked Shapes Statement Earrings, Madewell
- Avianna Low Vamp Mule, Target (Universal Thread)
- Long-Sleeve Tee, Madewell
- Wide Leg Marina Cropped Pant, Ann Taylor
Two is a funny coincidence, but three is a series! That second match, I didn’t do on purpose; this one, I did. You can barely see me blending in with those stripes. Where’d I go!?
- Suede Block Heel Pumps, J. Crew
- Striped Cuffed Top, Ann Taylor
- The Essential Slim Trousers, Anthropologie
I can’t be the only one to dress like I decorate. What can we call this? The best I could think of was #housetwinning, but if you have a better idea, let me know. I had a whole lot of fun with this.

March 19, 2019 at 12:53 pmHaha this is great! I have found myself twinning with whatever my current craft is…I recently went shopping, picked up an olive green shirt and mustard shirt, as well as olive green and mustard skeins of yarn. I didn’t even notice until I was home again unpacking everything! I did it again ordering rope. I felt I had picked some seemingly random colors, only to realize they were all in our front entryway rug. I think there is something in here about a Baader-Meinhof phenomena, but really it’s just proof that caring about our surroundings is important. It affects us more than we realize. :-)

March 19, 2019 at 1:07 pmYes! And I think you’re spot-on about the phenomenon playing a part. Side note, because it’s kinda related? I listened to an old episode of Ologies recently (on Cosmology), and I was able to impress the hell out of Brandon this morning when I called out “gravitational waves” as the subject of an NPR story before they said the phrase. (Only because I had just heard all about them a few days ago.)

March 19, 2019 at 3:41 pmI do this too, Nicole. Especially since I love sewing my own clothes and sofa cushions:) It reminds me a bit of the reverse of that old Domino column (RIP), “Turn my outfit into a room.”

March 19, 2019 at 5:31 pmThe white pants, top and shoes are one of my favorites. It complements your nice figure(after 3 children!) and I am constantly amazed by your beautiful home and how much of its’ beauty is your hard work. Can’t wait to see what you do with landscaping your lovely garden when Spring finally arrives-hope it doesn’t bring oppressive heat ten minutes after it arrives here in Virginia. Whew!

March 19, 2019 at 6:20 pmOoh can you please tell me how you did your hair in the last twinning? It looks beautiful.

March 20, 2019 at 8:00 pmLove your look! I think I remember reading that Frank Lloyd Wright would design a dress to go with his houses for the lady of the house to wear while entertaining. Maybe it’s just a thing?
