You remember the lovely bedroom redesign that I did with the help of Membership Reward Points from American Express, yes? Well now I am working with them again to host a Twitter Chat with HGTV designer John Gidding. John will be giving tons of advice next Thursday on how to decorate and find creative ways to stretch your budget — just like I did using my points.
John and I will be on Twitter for one hour on Thursday, July 29 at 8:30p.m. EST/ 5:30 p.m. PST (search #AmexHome). John will be answering your home design questions about anything from creating amazing guest spaces to choosing the right colors for your home. He’ll also have plenty of inexpensive ways to get your home ready for sale and ideas for upgrading rooms on a tight budget.
Now, you may have noticed the whole HUGE giveaway thing we’ve got going on here…
How do you enter to win?
Comment on this post with your questions for John and we’ll discuss some of them during our Twitter Chat. By leaving a comment, you’ll be entered to win items like a KitchenAid mixer, a Bissell vacuum, or a set of Cuisinart cookware (all of which can be bought with Membership Rewards points). There will be ten winners in this giveaway! Here are the prizes:
- Cuisinart® 10-Piece Commercial Cookware Set
- Cuisinart GR-4N Griddler
- Krups FBC2 6-slice Convection Toaster Oven

International readers are welcome to participate in the Twitter Chat and submit questions, but are not eligible to win. Remember you can ask anything about design and home improvements — this is a fun chance to get advice from an HGTV designer!
I know many of you are following me on Twitter @makingitlovely, but you can also follow John @JohnGidding. If you want to get some ideas for home improvement immediately, go to membershiprewards.com/home. And be sure to follow along to #AmexHome with John and I on Twitter next Thursday.

July 23, 2010 at 1:27 pmI have recently decided to re-do my master bath. Its not very big- room for one sink only, about 40 square feet plus bathtub/shower. Its currently builder grade with plastic surround. I was thinking of doing a retro style black and white since my house was build in 1907. What are your tips to help a gal maximize her space???? THANKS!

I’m wondering what he thinks are one to three things renters can do to make the biggest design statement. Obviously, there’s only so much we can do since we don’t own the space–but we still want to make it ours!

July 23, 2010 at 1:47 pmMy girlfriend and I are moving from separate apts into one. What’s the best way to find one unifying style from our different approaches? And what’s the best way to select what works and eliminate what doesn’t? Is starting with one anchoring piece for each room a good way to go? Or do we go for color/tone first and select what goes with it? Help, please.

July 23, 2010 at 4:39 pmWhat are some cheap but aesthetically pleasing ideas for partitioning off space and/or hiding storage in a 1-car garage? I’m going to use it as an art studio, but have to share with the space with some typical garage items. The biggest issues are hanging tool/shovel storage along one wall, upper shelving for paint buckets, etc. along the other(there’s also peg board storage along this wall but I think it can be adapted to suit my art needs), and a central vac unit in a corner. So far I’ve thought of using decorative folding screens, and maybe some type of mini curtain for the upper shelves, yet I don’t want it to look tacky and I have the (non-existent) budget of a student teacher right now. Thanks for any tips!

July 23, 2010 at 5:07 pmThe living room and kitchen in my new home are open to each other and share a very long wall. The color schemes I have for each room don’t go well together. July 23, 2010 at 6:01 pmWe have an odd little hallway with a small nook that runs between the kitchen and dining room. The kitchen is very small, so we want to do something with this space to expand the kitchen . The former owners had merely stuck an extra kitchen cabinet there. I’m thinking we should take out the cabinet and add either an antique pastry cabinet or just add numerous shelves to the “nook” area to create a “pantry”. Which would be a better design option?

July 23, 2010 at 10:14 pmMy husband and I are NYC teachers who are renting our dream apartment. We have found everything (and more!) that was on our dream apartment list: backyard, garage, two bedrooms, separate dining room, more than one bathroom, lots of closet space, normal neighbors….the list could go on forever. Basically, we LOVE this apartment and want to stay here for a long time.
Our problem is this, the apartment is bi-level; the first floor houses the kitchen, dining space, upstairs bathroom, 4 closets, the master bedroom, and the office (soon to be nursery) while the basement is where our living room is along with the half bath and two more closets. Because our living space is downstairs, my husband and I don’t really know how to make use of all of our space correctly. Neither one of us likes to be down there alone but there isn’t really defined space for us to hang out together and relax upstairs. We’ve been hanging out in the bedroom fighting over the remote or taking turns hiding at the computer in the office.
Can you help us?
