Twitter Chat with John Gidding, and a HUGE Giveaway!

You remember the lovely bedroom redesign that I did with the help of Membership Reward Points from American Express, yes? Well now I am working with them again to host a Twitter Chat with HGTV designer John Gidding. John will be giving tons of advice next Thursday on how to decorate and find creative ways to stretch your budget — just like I did using my points.

John and I will be on Twitter for one hour on Thursday, July 29 at 8:30p.m. EST/ 5:30 p.m. PST (search #AmexHome). John will be answering your home design questions about anything from creating amazing guest spaces to choosing the right colors for your home. He’ll also have plenty of inexpensive ways to get your home ready for sale and ideas for upgrading rooms on a tight budget.

Now, you may have noticed the whole HUGE giveaway thing we’ve got going on here…

How do you enter to win?

Comment on this post with your questions for John and we’ll discuss some of them during our Twitter Chat. By leaving a comment, you’ll be entered to win items like a KitchenAid mixer, a Bissell vacuum, or a set of Cuisinart cookware (all of which can be bought with Membership Rewards points). There will be ten winners in this giveaway! Here are the prizes:

  1. Cuisinart® 10-Piece Commercial Cookware Set
  2. Cuisinart GR-4N Griddler
  3. Krups FBC2 6-slice Convection Toaster Oven
  4. All-Clad 6.5 Quart Stainless Slow Cooker with Ceramic Insert
  5. KitchenAid Stand Mixer with Attachment Pack ( Empire Red)
  6. Wusthof Classic 8-Piece Block Set
  7. Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Upright Vacuum Cleaner
  8. DeLonghi Esclusivo Magnifica Super Automatic Machine

This giveaway is open to US residents only, one entry per person. Ten winners will be randomly chosen on July 30 to win one prize each. International readers are welcome to participate in the Twitter Chat and submit questions, but are not eligible to win. Remember you can ask anything about design and home improvements — this is a fun chance to get advice from an HGTV designer!

I know many of you are following me on Twitter @makingitlovely, but you can also follow John @JohnGidding. If you want to get some ideas for home improvement immediately, go to membershiprewards.com/home. And be sure to follow along to #AmexHome with John and I on Twitter next Thursday.

My husband’s British and has what one could only call “European” sense of style. Meaning: clean, modern, lots of glass, lacquer, dark leather, straight lines. Where can we find this look (while being budget minded) without resorting to Ikea. I loathe that place.

What are your thoughts on matching furniture styles and wood colors versus eclectic collections of styles and tones? We have some sleek modern stuff in dark and light woods, and some antique dark wooden stuff from families. We have some unfinished trunks from Penzey’s, and Thonet chairs from a swap meet. Is there a rule to organizing this furniture in rooms so it looks more like an eclectic collection as opposed to a mismash of all of the furniture we’ve ever gotten?

Thanks, Nicole and John, for this amazing giveaway!

    My decorating dilemma/question for John:

I have a LOT of trouble picking a unifying theme for my living spaces. It’s due to my desire to include every source of inspiration into the decor, which ends up looking cluttered/disjointed/tacky. I love sleek, modern, and clean spaces. I also love the bohemian aesthetic, with little mementos that add a personal touch. On top of that, I want to incorporate patterns/fabrics/motifs from the US Southwest (AZ, NM, CA) as well as from the Middle East and India. How do I combine my desire to make my home rich with decor from the world, all the while keeping things from looking out of control? Or am I asking for too much?

Our bedroom is very small – 12 X 10, we have the bed pushed up against a wall with two windows, they are on either side of the bed and we have pictures above the bed. Seems reasonable. My question is what do I do with the wall that the bed is facing? Currently it is just a large plain wall. The space between the end of the bed and the wall is quite small, so putting any kind of furniture piece there would take up too much room.

We’re looking for a house to buy – and we saw a a cute tiny house that we liked. The only thing is there is only one bathroom and even that is shared with (stacked)laundry!

Can anything be done to make it look less crammed? Would you recommend moving the laundry area?

Thank youuu – and looking forward to the twitter chat!

We have hardwood floors throughout our house and I know rugs would really tie the rooms together BUT we have a puppy who when given the chance will pee on any rug we put down. Any ideas for inexpensive floor coverings that would be easy to wash

What are the best tricks to make a guest/hall bath look inviting and warm but still uncluttered and clean?

Any advice on paint colors to make a low-ceilinged (7 foot or so) master bedroom feel larger? It’s a decent sized room (except for the low ceilings) but only has 2 small windows.
