My grandparents and I used to sing this song together all the time, and now Eleanor and I sing it while I play the ukulele. (My grandpa is gone, but we did do a duet for my grandma after we learned it.) We’re cute, but not that cute. She can’t hold a tune and I can’t play that well! That video though? The best.

Popular Science is shutting down its comments.

I think Macaulay Culkin and the Moldy Peaches guys are playing a trick on us.

33 of the worst (fictional) first sentences.
“Betty had eyes that said come here, lips that said kiss me, arms and torso that said hold me all night long, but the rest of her body said, “Fillet me, cover me in cornmeal, and fry me in peanut oil”; romance wasn’t easy for a mermaid.” — Jordan Kaderli -

September 27, 2013 at 2:54 pmThanks Nicole. Hustle is right! I just spoke at Blogpodium, (which you spoke at last year!) and the talk was alll about the hustle it takes to turn your blog into a business. I also gave you “props” as the kids say, for being willing to support other bloggers and share information. VERY important for all of our success. ~ karen!

September 27, 2013 at 3:08 pmKaren – we didn’t meet, but I spoke at Blogpodium as well! Yes – without information we can’t make informed decisions! Thanks for pushing that valuable information and more in your talk.
Nicole – question – you post both Holly’s and Karen’s post – I suppose as a juxtaposition. Do you have an opinion on either/both or are you showing us both sides of a story?
karen
September 27, 2013 at 3:26 pmHi Giulia – I’m going to take the liberty of answering the question from my own perspective. I don’t think there’s really a juxtaposition here. Holly loves to blog. I love to blog. My blog is my lone source of income. It’s my job. So it would obviously be ridiculously silly of me not to make money at it. Holly makes money with her blog too. I don’t think she’s opposed to that. I think she’s opposed to changing yourself and what you originally intended your blog to be, to fit the needs of certain sponsors.
That will never be a worry with me and my site.
Working the deal that I did was just good business sense. I love Home Depot, love the magazine, and love the cabinets. I’ve turned down many, many offers to talk about/do posts for things that I don’t particularly love.
Hope you had fun at the conference! ~ karen

September 27, 2013 at 3:41 pmI really like the way you wrote about that process. Not just as a business lesson for bloggers, as a clear business lesson for the readers I so often see upset about things like this as well.

September 27, 2013 at 3:16 pmHa ha. Small world. I was listening to Bunheads version of that song (which is amazing) this morning and making up lyrics to make my kids laugh.

September 27, 2013 at 3:47 pmThose tiles are really beautiful. What most people call “linoleum” is actually vinyl. Linoleum is considered eco-friendly because it’s made from renewable materials (including linseed oil) and is very durable.
