I checked another one off of my 30 Before Thirty list yesterday: Visit The Modern Wing of The Art Institute of Chicago. Inspired by the great works of modern art surrounding us, I summoned forth my inner photographer. I call this series “uninterested toddler looks away from art.”
(All photos were taken with my fun little Zumi camera.)

September 15, 2010 at 9:04 amDelightful. I think my favorite is her expression in the last photo. Such a look of disdain and yet she appears to be hardly able to muster the effort. I’ve seen many an adult peruse the art with that same expression. I imagine her saying what I’ve heard them say so often, “I could have strung that string of light bulbs like that!”
Thank you for sharing!

September 15, 2010 at 9:05 amToo cute! Good thing she had the comfy stroller to chill in.

September 15, 2010 at 9:18 amlol. I love it. I think nic’s comment sums it up pretty nicely.
You’re doing very well on your 30 Before 30 list! Almost there! (Can I come over when you make the Pad Thai?!)

September 15, 2010 at 12:16 pmThat’s me in the native masks section at our museum. And do I detect product in her hair, perfecting that delightful bang sweep? How cute is THAT?

September 15, 2010 at 12:18 pmThe ‘product’ is probably a little peanut butter and jelly from her lunch. ;)

September 15, 2010 at 12:36 pmVery sweet, she’s so pretty! I’m jealous, I live in Indy and the new wing at the Art Museum is on my list to do! I hope you enjoyed it!

September 15, 2010 at 12:37 pmToo cute. Just wait a few years and you take her to the miniature rooms in the basement of the Art Institute. My daughter and I spent a happy couple of hours checking everything out in those rooms – it was such a good memory of our visit.

September 15, 2010 at 1:46 pmI shared a very similar expression with Eleanor through 4 years of art school and student crits. ;)

September 15, 2010 at 2:05 pmHow cute! It looks like she is thinking “mommy, why did you bring me here?”

September 15, 2010 at 3:27 pmHa! Too funny! I’m glad you could do this before #2 comes along…double strollers are awesome, but not as..hmmm…romantic in museum/city settings. Not to mention all the stuff that comes along as soon as there’s two.

September 15, 2010 at 3:38 pmVery funny. We just visited Tolmeca ruins built over 2000 years ago and the most exciting thing for our toddler was a lawn mower that someone was using to keep the fields nice and walkable :-)

September 16, 2010 at 12:50 amSuper impressed at how well you are doing at completing them all. I am sure I would do as well. When I think of making a list like this, I always go way out there with big dreams instead of keeping it small and achievable. Maybe one day.
Love the pics.

September 16, 2010 at 8:15 amI just went there a few weeks ago to check out the Modern Wing plus the rest of the museum (I hadn’t been there since I was in school). I loved it!

September 16, 2010 at 11:10 amWe can only hope our children enjoy museums when they take their children! Adorable photos. I love that wing of the Art Institute!

September 17, 2010 at 4:53 amLong time reader, first time commenter! I have been inspired by your 30 before 30 list and a tv program here in Australia known as “B430” (things you should do before you turn 30) to create my own list. I have a little longer than you and am taking my time, but just thought I’d let you know that I’m so very happy I stumbled across this blog all those years ago – it’s often the highlight of my day! It has inspired me to create me own blog too – only a week old!
Thanks,
Tegan

September 26, 2010 at 6:51 pmI have been a lurker for some time, but when I saw your pic of Eleanor in front of *my Rothko* I had to comment!
Your pic triggered so many memories for me… trips while I was in high school down to Chicago from Wisconsin to visit the Art Institute… hours in the modern wing… the transformation and total love of modern art that those visits kicked off. I bet in total I’ve spent several hours in front of that red, white and blue Rothko, never able to articulate exactly what I love about it, but knowing that I feel something really profound in its presence.
Pardon my rambling, but thank you for the wonderful trip down memory lane!
And congrats for crossing this off your list! I recently updated my life list as well, so I hope you’ll make a new list to take you beyond 30! (Says the wise old 31-year-old. Ha!)
xoxo,
